How do I protect my knees when cycling?

More specifically: How do I protect my knees when cycling up hills? I've been cycling for years but lately when I go on my hill riding sessions my knees will give me a little trouble afterwards. The volume and intensity of my training has increased since I started participating in triathlons, so it could be that. But Im curious about technique. Is there a specific technique you should use when cycling up inclines? Its all road cycling aswell, nothing off road.
When Im climbing I stand up and Im out of the saddle a lot. Is this bad? Should I remain seated even when climbing?
Any help would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks

It could be from riding in too high a gear - that places a lot of strain on the joint. Try spinning up the hills in lower gears and see if that improves things.

It's also important to keep the knees warm - the old rule of thumb was "cover the knees below 60 degrees". Putting that in metric, wear tights or knee warmers until the temperature gets up to 16 degrees or so.
