The Government is to sign a deal this afternoon with the major car manufacturer Renault-Nissan, to bring electric vehicles to the Irish market.

The Government wants 250,000 cars and vans - or 10% of the national fleet - to be electric within a decade.

The Government hopes that by boosting renewable energies, like wind, and improving the electricity grid, the introduction of electric cars will lead to a significant drop in carbon emissions in the transport sector.

To achieve that goal, Energy Minister Eamon Ryan will sign a deal with the merged French-Japanese car maker on providing vehicles to Ireland - both for business and the private user.

The ESB is going to be party to the deal, and will provide a network of recharging points, although the vehicles can also be powered at home.

Other car manufacturers will be watching closely to see how today's deal impacts on their business plans.

Renault have a hard enough time making electrics in their petrol/diesel cars work.

I can only imagine what this contraption would be like.

Start - stop - break down - start - stop - break down - start - stop no electricity left

And thats only to get you out of the driveway:D

What do they need to sign a deal for in the first place?

    Is that for governement/state vehicles?

I dont understand what "deal" needs to be done to bring them in, surely the other manufacturers could take them to the EU court if the deal excludes them.

fear not, its a green party initiative, so its their latest "great idea" that as usual will prove to be completely impossible to actually deliver, just like...

    lightbulbs
    car parking levy
    recycling (we export it all!!)
    free bike/tax allowance scheme
public transport (watch cie/dublin bus/iarnrod eireann cut services to beat the band)

pathetic party voted for by pathetic navel gazers.... sooner we have a general election the sooner we rid ourselves.

this deal will be challanged in europe by the other manufacturers as anti-competitive.

I'm only guessing, but i'd imagine the deal has more to do with a government commitment to provide the necessary infrastructure.

Right Gormless, you beardy tree hugging freak, the rest of the Green, and Mr Ryan. I was going to keep the cat in my car which keeps it at 212 g/co2 per km, but now I'm taking it out, just to compensate for your hippie hiccups.

A Renault electric car , you have got to be fu**ing joking. Id be afraid I'll get electricuted everytime I get into it. For f**k sake will someone please remind them about the window regs , coilpacks, Clock units , LCD displays , entire wiring looms on some models that they struggle to get working at the moment never mind the whole car being electric. On the bright side no more gearboxes :D

+1. Really need to build infrastructure before importing the cars. I wonder what the cost of setting up the infrastructure will be...

    Guh?

    http://uk.reuters.com/article/motoringAutoNews/idUKL395725120090403

Anyone got any pics of these things.

    Hard to find info.

I don't mind alternative fuel sources all that much but I'm pretty sure electric cars won't do the miles and will take a long time to charge and will basically just annoy people.

Anyone else looking forward to forgetting to plug one in at night and not being able to get to work the next day :D

At least when its my phone I can bring a charger to work or something.

Thanks, looked for existing thread but couldn't see one. I couldn't believe there wasn't one, probably should have run with that and looked harder :pac:

So are there any pics of what these will look like or will it be an electric Megane looking like the current models?

The government part is allowing the building of on street charging stations. How are these cars green ? has noone noticed the two huge stripey exhaust pipes in Ringsend where the leccy is made.
Rechargeable cars will never catch on as the whole idea of a car is freedom, not 8 hours recharginging. As usual our government has missed the boat and the point, fuel cells will be future of electric cars, with hydrogen pumps appearing in garages.
It is a long way off, Petrol has been running out and th demise of the car being scare mongered since the early 70,s.
As technology moves on crude extraction technology is making previously uneconomic strata of minerals more viable.
I could be wrong but I don't see petrol running out anytime soon.
For people ordering the tesla it has a 6 hour charge time, Now if your girlfriend rings and says come over I'm feeling ..... no no no can't me cars being charged, can you wait four hours. yea right.

I think these are just supposed to be commuter vehicles and not designed for long journeys.

I agree it can't possibly catch on large scale with things like 100 mile limits on journeys as that is just too short a distance.

Charging time is too long, what use is a charging station when it takes hours to charge?

Batteries have limited life spans and can be damaged by short charging (just look at laptop batteries although they'll use different types that are improved from that you'd assume).

Lots of other countries are going for this too if you Google around. It isn't just us but ultimately it will be a waste of money and we'll end up moving to hydrogen in the future.

Mainly from soot inhalation from all the diesels the green party made people buy.
