Hi, 25 year old male with 6 years NCB and 2 points for talking on a mobile phone last summer.

Rang up to get a renewal quote with Hibernian, have been with them either direct or through a broker since I started driving at the age of 17.

Last year my quote was €500 and now they're quoting me €800. Can anyone explain this?

You get a discount if you don't have penalty points and you've lost that discount now. Also there are signs insurance premiums are creeping up for the first time in years. Shop around and let us know the best quote you're getting!

It happens quite often, shop around for the cheapest quote and then ask Hibernian can they beat it.

Some companies will "waive" two points, dunno which ones though and I presume they don't do that for those who are shopping around.

I'm not telling you to lie - but best of my knowledge they are not legally able to find out if you have penalty points (up to 5 P-Points - from 6 onwards they can find out).

and they are not allowed to ask if you have points (I think there was a legal issue a couple of years ago) .....from what I understand of the system anyway !!

    I'm 30 with 4yrs NCB and commercial insurance on a ford fiesta van (1.8L Diesel) .... €500ish

Well in the Quotation form on plus25.ie they called it conviction. I got a quote for €430 fully comp with NCB protection but wanted to be sure so I rang them up and asked if by conviction, they meant penalty points.

The did and having added the 2 points for talking on the phone, the customer service agent tells me that the company views talking on the phone as a worse offence than speeding

    That's completely nonsensical!

Try Prestige Insurance in Cavan. I got a very good quote with them for my wife. They couldn't be beaten on price and I tried every insurance company.

Data Protection is still an undervalued concept in this country.

My dad was in a Motor Tax office a year (or so) ago & overheard a converstaion between Motor Tax desk clerk & long standing Irish insurance company staff member.

The insurance company rang to confirm information regarding penalty points in relation to a prospective customer...the desk clerk confirmedthis to my father when queried.

He pointed out the legal implications of this conversation, to which she responded along the lines of this is normal practice & has been going on since points were introduced.

In short, what you say is correct...'not legally able...' but they still can/do.

So would I, speed limits in this country are quite arbitrary on the whole, some dangerous, badly kempt country roads with poor visiblity have a 100kph speed limit, the same as a Dual Carriagway?? And technically driving at 102 kph on a dual carriageway is speeding.....

Whereas talking on your mobile (non hands-free) while driving is always dangerous and if you think it's quite alright then you shouldn't really be driving

i'd be more worried about a guy on a phone that a guy doin even 20kph over the speed limit.

there's speeding and there's driving dangerously.. they're not always linked imo.
