Giant escape r1 vs Trek 7.3fx

    Hi guys

Just a quick question. I'm relatively new to buying bikes and i've been looking around for the last few weeks (I'm hoping to avail of the bike to work scheme).

As a quick note i'm looking for a bike to to a 12 mile round trip commute 5 times a week which i'm currently doing on a banger, but something strong and comfortable enough to do some light touring and obviously that can take panniers and that. (did my first tour last year around galway and mayo coast and loved it). I intend to fit racks and mudguards myself as i need them.

I should state that I'm not a big fan of dropped bars, as i don't find the hand positions that comfy so i'm looking for more of a flat bar bike.

I've looked at and tried bikes from the speicalized sirrus range, the lapierre rcr range, the giant Fcr range but they all seem a little bit racey to me if you know what i mean. I'm a big enough chap (6 3) and i like the feel of a sturdy bike. I'm not looking for a whole load of speed.

The two i've like the most having rode them and seen them have been the trek 7.3fx and the giant escape r1.

I know that these are lower spec'd than some of the other bikes i've mentioned but i genuinely just like these two the best. I would like to know would anyone recommend either of these bikes and which is the better spec'd out of interest bearing in mind the above. I've been reading about them and hearing that this year's trek bikes have bad parts. Are these parts (bontrager) that bad for the likes of me? What about giant's in house parts?

Thanks in advance for any help guys
    Binman
