Do you eat chicken?

Personally I haven't in over a year and, a friend asked me the other day which reminded me why I don't.

They are basically tortured for their entire lives then killed. Around 4 of them are trapped in a tiny cage no bigger than a shoebox, and their beaks are smashed off to stop them pecking each other, and their wings are snapped to stop them flapping around the cage. All while they are still alive.

I won't even get into how they're killed.

Anyway this is how chickens are farmed, look it up if you don't believe me. I don't think it's worth an animal going through that much pain just so I can have a few minutes of pleasure from eating them with my dinner.

    Any thoughts?

I couldn't live without chicken! I think pretty much all the animals have an awful time of it, but still, I'm an omnivore!

Ahh c'mon grow a pair, this is all part of the natural food chain that mother nature intended...

So, you don't mind them going through all that torture just so you can eat them? Could you not like.. eat something else?

I think caging and tortuting millions of chickens in industrial factories is a bit less 'natural' than for example a lion attacking a zebra for food in the wild.

Search google for kfc, especially some of the top 10 results. Then again you are probably the type who would rather stick your head in the sand and pretend nothings wrong. i'll paste it for you anyway what they do:
KFC suppliers cram birds into huge waste-filled factories, breed and drug them to grow so large that they can’t even walk, and often break their wings and legs. At slaughter, the birds’ throats are slit and they are dropped into tanks of scalding-hot water—often while they are still conscious. It would be illegal for KFC to abuse dogs, cats, pigs, or cows in these ways.

KFC’s own animal welfare advisors have asked the company to take steps to eliminate these abuses, but KFC refuses to do so. Many advisors have now resigned in frustration.

Okay, I'll just have some steak..wait no..some veal.. wait..

    I haven't thought this through.

No I'm vegetarian now but this is what kicked it all off. Cattle/etc are still cruelly treated (I don't eat them for health reasons mainly) but nothing compared to how chickens are treated. It's horrific.

I think we should all give up meat. I mean, tofu tastes even nicer than pork or beef*

Fair enough. It just doesn't make sense to me, how cruel people are. If you saw the chicken having its beak/wings/legs sliced off in front of you, then placed in boiling hot water. Would you still eat him on your plate straight after? And not feel an ounce of guilt? Seriously?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,789 ✭✭✭✭ScumLord

There's an intensive chicken farm in my town, I wouldn't get chicken anywhere unless I knew it's organic. There's also an organic chicken farm here. The organic, free range birds are bastards and deserve to die and be eaten, intensively farmed chickens are just disgusting, I've seen and smelled them in the flesh and wouldn't ever eat one ever again.

Op do you eat eggs??? chicken abortion? how about fish??

In fairness OP said they were a vegan so assuming that's true, the above don't apply.

Vegetarians annoy me. We dont force ye to eat meat so stop trying to convinve us it's wrong when our diet has evolved to it.

I have seen it. I've also seen cows/sheep slaughtered. Hell, I even shot a cow myself once, then proceeded to eat it. Guilt? No, not really.

Well I only eat free range eggs, and soya milk, so I'm not really a vegan. Think it's how I will be eventually though. Vegetarian for now anyway.

Seriously, a diet of just veg sounds boring.

I could live on a diet of just meat though as long as I had a BBQ. Mmmm BBQ.. charcoaled death

Listen. You can come in here and spout all the crap you want about chicken and roosters and hens and cocks and whatnot, but you're not going to make a difference.

There is the option of posting in the humanities forum, should you wish to have an informed debate on the ethics of animal treatment. That will not happen here.

Well what happens to those chickens, whether it is considered "right" or "wrong" is entirely up to you. I know what I consider it anyway. Our diet evolving to it is bs tho.

Fair enough , I actually didn't want this to turn into a debate on the ethical treatment of animals in general. Or meat-eating. Just more specifically these chicken factories and if people were aware their €5 chicken from tesco probably came from one of these boiler houses.

Which is why most people eat free range...

We are not all slaughtering backstards.

And just because we may be aware of the treatment that animals go through to get on our plate doesnt make us cruel either...

Thousands of people suffer harrowing hours and labour abuse, for pittence to plant and harvest fruit like bananas, etc. for you...

Does that make you a monster if you eat them knowing what suffering and hardship the people went through?

Plenty of far more important things in life to worry about. Chicken is lovely, especially in a korma or obviously in a snack box after a few pints.:D

I love how people like this use the extremes to make a point. What about free range animals? Is it ok to eat them?
For the record, i've worked in chicken farms, turkey farms and piggeries. I still eat chicken, i love it. Turkey, not so much, simply because i don't like it as much. Pork products, mmmm, tasty.
I don't like vegetables, don't particulary like the way they are farmed either, but i'm not using that as a platform to preach at you, am i?

    Hmm, let's see.
    vegetarian |ˌvejiˈte(ə)rēən|
    noun
a person who does not eat meat, and sometimes other animal products, esp. for moral, religious, or health reasons.

    You were saying?

    Here's another one for you.
    hypocrisy |hiˈpäkrisē|
    noun ( pl. -sies)
the practice of claiming to have moral standards or beliefs to which one's own behavior does not conform; pretense.

Can the Mod please lock this, I just discovered theres a Vegetarian forum. Probably be better off discussing this there.

This thread is getting too full of "uhhh huhh but if god didnt want us to eat animals why did he make them out of meat" type of people.
