sorry cant help but have always wanted to join a golf and fishing club - thereby combining two of my most enjoyable hobbies
go for it provided the course is in good knick

I live down the road from it. I would know most of the developers. They're up sh1t creek at the moment with the banks. Latest figure I heard was in excess of €10m (work in the golf industry).

If you like the course then go ahead and join, you will have huge bargaining power if you want to haggle (smaller joining fee/might let you off of your sub for a year too). You need to ensure that your investment is safe. A golf club is not the easiest business to wind up though without a huge financial loss.

There are many great deals on great courses out there at the moment.

thanks for the replies guys. Had another look during today. very busy in the morning - all booked up and lots of fourballs, but practically no-one playing after lunch. is this normal in clubs on saturdays? No movemnet on joining fee or subs but fee is a share so I assume this provides some security. Strongly considering joining as its very close to me and seems in excellent condition.

I know nothing of Bunclody, or its circumstances, but share provides you no security at all.

TBH, I wouldn't be buying in anywhere at the moment. Come to some arrangement like where you lease for three years with an agreed purchase price down the line. Far more established clubs are doing this, such as http://www.rathsallaghhousehotel.com/golf/members.asp

fee is a share means diddlypoo

it means if your club goes to the wall you will be in the queue to get your share back
that would be after the bank and other creditors get their share so your share will be worth a big fat zer:eek:

negotiate, all clubs are, if they dont i'd give it a skip for 12 months and see where they are

Have not played it yet and dont know what the subs are but if your in that area you cant be far from Mount Wolsley,Carlow or Coolattin or maybe Enniscorthy the last two i am sure would be reasonable on the membership fees just other options.

Jeff Howes is an excellent designer (just look at The Heritage), and I wasn't surprised by the quality of the place when one of the directors took me around the place last year. It looks magnificent. Assuming all goes well with the club, it will be one of the best courses in the region with some strong natural features, a quirky lift and a quirkier clubhouse. I don't have any opinion on the fee/share issue, other than to agree that you're in a great position to negotiate.

1967 is spot-on to recommend Coollattin as a comparable alternative nearby. Enniscorthy is a pleasant country course, but not in the same league.

    Good luck
