Hybrids

Don't know if this has been asked before - but, what was the story with the hybrids?

So we know that the final 5 created the other "biological" cylon models, and there were 12 models in total. And I guess we can also assume that the final 5 updated the raiders and improved them with their biological elements.

So did the 5 also create the hybrids to run the base stars? And if so, why do they look different from any of the existing 12 models? Anders' situation established that any cyclon model can potentially become a hybrid, so why would the 5 bother creating the hybrids to look distinct from the other models? Why not just randomly pick a 6 or an 8 or whatever to act as a hybrid?

Also, my memory is fading, but didn't the young Adama encounter an old male hybrid in Razor? Wouldn't this mean there are actually 14 cylon models?

I know this is all probably nitpicking and is simply due to the fact that the show's creators hadn't thought up the whole cylon origins backstory when they introduced the hybrids, but I'm curious if there's any plausible "in-universe" reason?

When the "final five" arrived with the modern era cylons, they had already created the hybrids as part of their developement of human form cylons, but abandonded this developement when the final five came, since they had already had the tech...

from what i remember, the hybrids were the centurions attempt at creating skin jobs, and it final 5 were actually the first five who created the other 7 skin job models.

I think the hybrids were the "robotic" centurian's attempts of a human-like model, hence Young Adama coming across one at the end of the first war. When the "final 5" came into contact with those cylons and said they'd exchange rebirthing for an end to the war, they didn't pursue the project any further, so maybe took what they had and found they could plug them into the Basestars (or maybe the final 5 made the recommendation?).

Razor explains the background behind the hybrids pretty well to an extent.

They were the furthest the Cylons could get at creating a half human, half machine being. The final five came along and bridged the gap between organic and technology that the Cylons lacked, creating the 8 Cylon "skinjob" models in the hope that the Cylons would have a better understanding of humanity not destroy their former masters. The final five also introduced resurection technology to the Cylons.
