I need to get some rack action going for my new space. I'd like it to be pretty ;-) Anyone got anything they can recommend? Or has anyone built their own that they'd like to show us?

I built my own about a month or so ago (30 unit beech rack). I'll post up some photo's and details when i get home later if you are interested.

Its definately worth doing.. saved me a few hundred quid easily.

    ok took some photo's...

Bascially I had a 6 unit beech rack which i purchased a few years ago, i had outgrown that and buying premade ones were a rediculous price. It had to be beech to match my room, so other cheaper laminates or non laminates could be used.. pine would work out about the same price.

    For the parts..
Rack strips / Capture Nuts & Bolts- Could not find any in Ireland.. Apparently Dublin flight case company might have had them for sale, but i just went back to a company on Ebay i had used before..
    http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Home-And-Studio-Direct
I purchased 2 x 1m rack strips (+ 2 6 unit ones which i didnt use) and 60 M6 nuts bolts and washers = Total cost about 50 quid including shipping.

Wood - From B&Q.. the large laminate sheets they have down the back.. 2m high and about 1/2 m deep.. The largest ones they do.. I needed beech colour so had to use these. And initially i was going to mount my mixer so needed it to be deep enough.. I didnt in the end, so could have saved money by going for the smaller sheets. It's also worth getting a roll of the same colour edging (2.50) to give a nice finish to where you have cut. Total Cost - 55 quid.. could have gotten away with about 40 quid with the smaller sheets.

Fixings - From B&Q, bought 8 right angled brackets to use as the supports for the unit (the grey ones in the picture inside the unit) for 15 quid or so, and 4 corner hinges on the outside corners (about 5 quid).. Probably more strength than is needed as the rack units themselves when installed will brace the box anyway. I also bought some dowel rods (2 euro), but didnt end up using them. Had wood glue in my garage to use..
Total Cost - 20 quid or so.. oh and a bag of screws from my local hardware shop.. B&Q are a rip for those..

    Building
Pretty simple.. measure and cut.. One key thing.. 19" rack units are not 19" wide, they are wider.. Can't remember offhand but they are like 19.3 or 19.5 inches.. so measure before you cut.. Rest of it is pretty explanatory, you are just building a box.. It is a lot easier with two people.. at 30 units or so high, holding the brackets, woods, screws etc. is a nightmare solo.. Took about an hour for us to build it.

I'm sure it could be done nicer, but it was relatively cheap, and could be done even cheaper.. and does exactly what I need it to do..
I also went and purchased a power conditioner unit (got a Phonic B-stock one from Dolphin for 45 Stg) primarily to help with the power cable mess at the back.. I haven't wired it all up yet, but to have a single power button on the front for a lot of the units and tidier wiring was nicer than the power extension leads you see in the photos..

Oh.. and don't take the piss out of my Behringer units :)

Btw.. to give you an indication of what companies charge.. that empty 6u unit under the desk beside the PC cost 90 Sterling + P&P a year or so ago..

Edit - Forgot to add.. Put it on casters (2.50 each at B&Q).. worth every penny.. the 6u box weighed a fair but, and 30u box would be very heavy.. glides along on casters.
I did also buy 2 extra right angle brackets to made a brace across the front.. but these were a waste of money.. This unit is as solid as a rock without them.

Anyway, that's it.. nothing spectacular.. gimme a shout if you have any specific questions

Mine is a 9 unit wooden rack that fits into its own flight case. It looks like its been all over the world i.e its covered in stickers from various airlines and freight companies as well as an official Scorpians tour sticker saying "Choir Sampler"... I bought it at a time when I was unsure about my musical goals. I asked God for a sign and he spoke to me through studio furniture. Can I get a witness?

That's the drummer from 3plusme. He/she is going to go solo because of all the hassle over not paying recording fees.

The new act is called 2willdo
