Getting Windows Media Centre to work in Ireland

    Hi All,

I am trying to get windows media centre to work so i can use it to record the channels. I am on basic digital with upc in Galway. I have a laptop with Vista on it and Media centre (which is included on Vista) and a EC300 Digital TV Tuner PCI Express Card (this came with the HP dv9000 laptop). When i scan for channels i cant get anything.

I was wondering if anyone else can get Media centre to work with any tuning card. As i would like to build a PVR in future.

I am trying it with the stuff that i have (Laptop and Express TV card) first to see if it works before i go and buy all the bits i need to build a pvr. Also if anyone has recommendations on what bits to buy to build a cheap pvr i would be most greatful.

    Appreciate any advice/help

    Mugie

EC300 Digital TV Tuner is DVB-T. The digital terrestrial. Are you in an area where you can receive digital terrestrial. The DTT signals are only in a handful of places in Ireland so far. Also to pick up a signal you need an aerial, not your NTL coax cable. And DTT only has a few channels.

To get NTL working with Media Center you need a different tuner card. An analogue one which takes RCA input from your NTL scart output.

    Thanks Bazwaldo,

Im not sure if there are any DVB-T Channels available in Galway. I tried it with the aerial as well but no joy. But it is good to hear that Media Centre will work with my ntl box.

Are there any tuner cards that you would recommend. Also will they work on and XP machine with Media centre installed.

Thanks again for all your help

Yeah it works on XP. However you need to get a mpeg2 decoder from somewhere. They come with DVD player software. Most use nvidia pure decoder.

In Vista, MS have a decoder bundled so theres no messing with this required. I can't recommend any USB or PCMCIA tuners as I don't know any. Others may know.

Thanks for the info. Its good to know that about XP and the mpeg2 decoder.

if anyone wants to recommend any tv tuner cards either for laptop or desktop (as i have an xp desktop machine also) it would be great

    thanks again
