Tax responsibilities for contract work.

With a recent shift in family responsibilities I've had to employ (contract) a self employed individual to do works on the family home, furniture, grounds etc.

It is quite extensive (annoyingly so) and mostly craft repair, which they will be done at their own home for around two months, at what I expect to be 25 hours a week.

I am wondering if I am under any legal responsibility to inform revenue on such matters or do I leave it in the hands of the self employed gentlemen?

I have heard mixed reports in the relation to hours he will have to work and so forth and while I very much doubt they would be of the unscrupulous kind I am wary of people working and claiming job seekers allowance.

If it matters I will be paying them by a/c payable cheques only.

Any guidance on the matter would be warmly received.

    Thank you

I don't think you have any legal responsability. You are not employing him but paying someone that provides you a service. My only advice would be get invoices for everything and pay by cheque/transfer if you are worried about him claiming jobseekers allowance.

I dont think you are obligated to declare payments for service. Where an issue may arise is that you would be in a position to writeoff this service against some sort of taxes.
