After some weeks selling my car, now have about € 5000 to € 7000 to buy a nice 5 door car

Was hoping to pick up a reliable low deprection car (if such a thing anymore) like a golf mark V, ford focus new model etc

Have been looking and looking through carzone, cbg etc etc, also tried merlin car auctions and still does not seem to be anything within that range with the exception of the high milage cars which really not interested in

Is it worth just going to a dealer with a wad of cash and offering them € 3000less than asking price bearing in mind no trade in etc

Do people have any experience of getting good cash discounts from dealers at the moment?

On a once very expensive executive large engined barge you would probably be looking at getting €3k off the list price.

On the family runabouts you mentioned, not a chance. Dealers might have them priced on the high side to allow for a reasonable discount but they are not pricing them at €3k more than they are willing to accept for them. Offering €3k below the list price of one of these cars and you will probably end up being asked to leave the premises swiftly.

My advice is that if you have around €7k to spend then look at cars in the €8k to €8.5k bracket and shop around for the best deal. 8% to 10% discount should be achievable.

Cars you are looking at are the most sought after cars by many people, so you won't get massive discounts.

Was in Merlin Auction last night. 04 new shape golf 1.4 5dr 67k miles made 6200 plus fees (=6750), would be due a timing belt (+400 ?) and had damage on one door (+ 250 ? if you chose to repair it). Also no warranty etc. Costing someone 7400 to have it in the condition that you would buy it from a garage. And at that price it was a provisional sale (reserve not met).

04 old shape focus 1.4 5dr wine metallic, plain car, 80k miles, made 4700 plus fees (=5200). Again due a timing belt, and needed a good polishing etc. Costing 5800 or so to leave in retail condition, again no warranty. For an 80k miles example ???

Bottom line is I think you will have problems getting a "nice 5 door car ... like a golf mark V, ford focus new model etc" for under 7k.

Buy one in the north, pay the VRT and run away laughing! There are cars sat on dealers lots that have been there for over a year. They're just not smelling the coffee.

Can't hurt to ask, worst they can say is no, and if they do say don't expect them to agree after 5mins,it might take some time.
