    Hi,
My pc died over a week ago (see pc dead? thread).
I bought a cheap enough replacement on adverts.
My old pc has a sata HDD but the new one I got has only ide.
I need to get the data from the old (sata) to the new (ide)
Whats the easiest and cheapest way of doing it??
Would prefer to be able to buy whatever I need in a shop today rather than order online.
    Any advice greatly appreciated.
    Sham.

You could buy a SATA HDD enclosure that connects over USB.

Do you mean IDE HDD enclosure - given his new drive is IDE?

sham, what model is your motherboard. Chances are it could have an IDE port as well as SATA - in which case all you'll need is an IDE cable. 5euro from komplett.ie for example

no sata on the new pc, I had a look on the motherboard.
I need to connect the old hard drive which is sata.
Don't really need the new HDD but will leave it there anyway.
I think I will use the sata to usb device you can get online.
Now I just need to find somewhere in Dublin that I can buy it.
    Thanks for the replies.

Maplins can give you cables for internal/external connection to a new pc.
    For example:

    Thanks all.
I originally wanted to connect the sata to boot windows xp from it but not sure if thats possible?
All the suggested methods will simply make the sata like an external drive.
Sorry I should have been clearer.

how old is your pc?go to bios ,is there an option, boot order, boot hd,cd dvd, BOOT FROM USB,set boot priority USB first, usb o, hardrive 2,or 3 boot priority usb 0,or first boot device =usb.in bios advanced options, boot .boot usb,or boot from external device.
IVE never tried it, you,d have to buy a usb 2 sata cable to try it.install ACTIVE boot disk demo on pc, register it online ,click, make /burn cd iso ,image to a cdr, boot from the cd ,it loads mini VISTA os from cdr ,enables you to copy files from any device, to drive c ,drag and drop files on a folder, eg backup ide1 folder.
you,ll have to set bios boot from cdrom, dvd to use the image disk.peats or pc world ,maplins do usb to sata cables.30euro approx.

    Sounds a bit too messy.
    Thanks for the reply.
The only reason I was trying to use my old sata drive was to save me from downloading all my progams again.
Need to buy a new pc in the next few weeks, is there anyone who still give XP as the OS?
    Thanks all for the replies.
