I was just wondering if it was possible to get an STI exam done while you have your peroid? And also what time would you need to be at St. James to get a 'ticket'? I've tried to get an appointment with the Mater but I would have to wait till the end of may and I can't wait that long....I'm worried that I might have caught something while I was on holidays a few weeks ago and it's really starting to get to me!

I was just wondering if it was possible to get an STI exam done while you have your peroid?

My experience of the STIs test is, bloods, urine sample and high vaginal swab - I would say wait til after your period - not sure if its possible to have the high vaginal swab done during - it may be.
And also what time would you need to be at St. James to get a 'ticket'?

Anytime, the earlier the better though as it gets pretty crowded.

Why not go to your GP and have the tests done? My GP offers it as an individually priced service 'Full Sexual Health Check' and it costs around 100 euro, but no wait time - you could be waiting 4 hours in James. Results take up to 12 weeks.

If your holiday was a few weeks ago then anything you may have caught wont be any worse in the few days you wait to finish your period.

I know the GP is expensive but its worth it to put your mind at ease.

Hi OP, I had sti tests done and was told to wait til period gone. I think this is mainly due to health and safety issues for person doing the exam (HIV risk etc of period blood).
Hope I don't cause offence by saying that ok?
I wonder if family planning clinics offer STI testing?
For your own peace of mind have it done ASAP even if you have to go privately.

I know for a fact they wont examine you while you have your period - the results will be unclear - so you'll have to wait til after your period or even better a week after your period ends (your 14th day of cycle) results will be at their clearest.
On the upside at least you got your period!!!

Might get a better response from the biology and medicine forum, doctors post there and would probably know for sure

Or, you could ring any GP and ask if its possible, then get the free test in James if it is.

For a smear test, you will be told to schedule the test during mid-cycle. I think that it's the most accurate time to test.

Ring the clinic and ask the question. It's the only way to know for certain.

Have you any symptoms or is it just a particular incident that has you worried.

If you have no symptoms but have had unprotected sex with someone who's status is not known to you, then I recommend you wait until 13 weeks post exposure to be tested. Testing sooner than that will not be conclusive for HIV or Hep B/C.

See sticky at top of page for plenty of options of testing locations.

Accurate testing can still be achieved while you are on your period but please wait till its finished as a courtesy measure to the clinician. Its got nothing to do with the urine or blood sample of even the swabs but most (good) clinicians will want to perform a visual check for HSV and HPV symptoms

I had it done this morning, going back in two/three weeks for test results.
I couldn't afford to go down the GP route as I simply don't have the money..!! I felt as if I had to go as soon as possible because a particular incident was playing on my mind and I thought I was displaying symptoms of an infection...
Will say this for them, they have an excellent service and are very helpful to the patients. I was a nervous wreck going there but they made me feel so much at ease...
