Call your 10k time for Sunday

With an array of 10K taking place next Sunday and a sizable collection of us taking part in the various races it might be interesting for us to predict our finishing time - just a bit of added interest to the events:

My first ever road race was this corresponding event (UCC 10K) last year. I finished (struggling) in 51:08, after two months "training".

On Sunday I'm hoping to knock at least 5min off this, although I did a race pace 10K on Monday (on the track admittedly) and clocked myself @ 43:53! .

    So I'm predicting 45:30

Anything sub 40 and I'll be happy.

Been on the road bike for the last week, so the knees should be well up for it.

I might head to Ballinasloe on Sunday.
If I do, hoping for a sub 50.

Have only done one 10k in the past 3 years, and only started properly training with a club since January.
I've managed an 8k this year in 39:07 mins, and did the Streets of Galway 8 in a chip time of 38:54, so I'm hoping to go sub 50 for a pb in the 10k.
Whether I run a 10k this Sunday or not is undecided as yet.:D

    BUPA 10km on sunday,
51'+ and 50'+ a couple of years ago...hoping for sub 49' but def sub 50'.
Have a football match on Sat but hopefully I won't be too knackered come Sunday!!

    GIR 08: 41:19
    Cupid's Dash 09: 39:50

I'm in better shape now than when I ran the Cupid's Dash in February, but that obviously wouldn't have the mad crowds I'm expecting on Sunday for GIR. If I can go sub 40 again I'll be thrilled, but beating my GIR time from last year would be ok.

Beating my two work mates doing it is an absolute must :D

    PB is 36:19

This will only be my 3rd 10K but I'm confident I can get just under 35. Or closer to 34:30 if I don't get stuck at the start.

Cant wait for it. Only problem is I tempted to run in Rahenyon Saturday as well.

The course is definately not one for pb's so be very careful. Very easy to get carried away early on in this one with the buzz around the place, and first 5km is very fast. Last 5km is a ball breaker though so pace yourself. The very best of luck all the same and make sure to post an update:)

Thanks for the tip. I've made my mistakes in training I hope. Ran it twice a few weeks back and did the first 5K in just over 16 then took 21 on the second 5K.

I think the key to this race is effort levels try and keep it going on the hills, this doesnt mean pushing it harder but keeping the same effort, last year the amount of people I was running with that started to push it hard at 5k on the hills pulled away from me and I passed them walking @ 8k. keep the effort the same hills should slow you down but not break you :) ..

I hoping to do the Great Ireland run in 41min or so.

Only started training 8 weeks ago but missed 2weeks with Cheltenham etc was hoping to break 40mins not looking good now..

Ahwell maybe next month i will go closer with more training.

Either way should be good race and best off luck to everyone

MarieC asked me yesterday am I holding true to my 2009 goal as stated at the start of the year.

Answer: Yes. The aim was Sub 40 and that one is done. I entered 3 10ks to give myself a couple of shots.

    Adare 39'13"
    Plassey 38'57"
Bupa ??? dunno will see what happens

Hoping sub 45, but would be happy to get around in sub 50 and finish comfortably.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,526 ✭✭✭Killerz

Really tough one to call for this. Am gunning for a sub-40 (which would be my first sub40). On training runs, am coming out around 42-43 mins, including a decent hill. Will depend on number of people out there and how i feel on the day. Took a (slow) run around the course last week - it appears to be hilly enough. In any event, hope the rain clears up for it. I'll see how the first 5k goes and i'll judge from there.

Good luck to everyone doing it.

Doing bupa on sunday. Ran a 37:38 last year. Did a 36:13 in feb. and Ive been training like a beast since so Im aiming for 34:40 or 34:50. At the very least to break into the 35s.
Weather is meant to be fine so there'll be no excuses from me after.......
Gotta get there early though, it'll be a nightmare getting stuck down the field.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 310 ✭✭gmurran

Anyone done this race before and know what time I need to get there for to get up the front of the 35 minute zone? cheers.

    Poor old Tunney

Dunno if I'm running tomorrow or not. I'm going for a longish run this evening hopefully so it'll only be an easy run if I do go tomorrow. So, Great Ireland Run sub 50 or so, I guess.

If you stay on the North side of the road before the race you don't need to get there particularly early. It always starts late too, but if you are ready and in the area 5-10 minutes before the scheduled start you should have no trouble.

had a dodgey knee last year and finished in 64 mins..
so hoping this year to get below 50.. hopefully :)

I've always entered by the south side :p
It generally starts up to 30 mins late (27mins late by my watch for both 2007 and 2008!!).

The RTE coverage starts at 1pm and they interview some of the celeb and elite runners so this delays the women's race, which starts 10mins before the main race.
Note to self: Write to organisers to complain about this.

    It's up and down.
It's flat up until the downhill around 4km (see the map) and then a short hill just before 5km.
Another downhill just after 6km but a long varied climb between 6.5 and 7.5.
At 8km it drops into Furry Glen with a corresponding climb out (ends around 3rd water station). There is a little dip just before 9km and then flat to finish.

When I started traning in January I planned sub 40

Then I started thinking over 40 would be reasonable

    Then the target became 45

No I'm telling myself that i WILL beat 50 (I hope!)

    Thank for the course advice

Finished in a disappointing 00:36:20 in 63rd. Been watching videos of the McMillan Elite a bit too much. Had a very comfortable first five but didn't have the fitness to pick it up for the last straight which is normally what I'm good at.

Incredible how far the leaders were ahead. Lost sight of them after 2.5k.

Best race in terms of organisation I've ever seen. Only disappointment was that they did not take the split times this year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,454 ✭✭✭mloc123

What was the story with the start clock? It was at 11 minutes before the field started to move..I presume the finish clock did not take that 11 minutes into account.

That was probably elite women's clock, they started 10mins before field. There would also have been a clock for the main start.

2 clocks - one for the elite women's race which started early (I'm guessing 11 minutes early) and one for the mass start.

    Damn you Racing Flat!

Was aiming to beat 45 min, and did 45:08 :( But I'm happy really, since it was quite an ambitious target for me. Got caught up in the usual melee at the start, with loads of people in the wrong starting areas. Great race though. Very well organised as usual.

Well done to everyone who participated. I have 450+ photos from the Junior and Senior races, and hope to upload them shortly. Great weather for the race, and great to see Fagan and Cullen performing well.

Happy with my run. 2007--5211,2008--5034,2009--4840 (PB) so in another 10yrs i will win the damn thing!! Negative Splits as always 2454//2346 and did the last km in an almost respectable 4:16 so was feeling strong for me. Was hoping to get a top 1000 finish but the numbers put paid to that. Again several people in the 45min place where they far from belonged.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 54 ✭✭kwyjibot

Finished in 49:25, which I was pretty happy with. My lack of fitness really showed on the climb out of the Furry Glen, but I managed to avoid stopping/walking, even if I was barely running at walking pace by then!

That big gantry at about 9.5k looked like the finish point from a distance, thought the last km had passed a bit too quickly!

Still a quality performance on that course so well done man.

If it's any consolation saw a GPS measurement of the course at 10.19km (running the corners tight) so between that and the hills its worth 30secs+ on a fast course. Shame they take it down the Glen, ruins the bloody thing. The path down there was in bits and elevation throws fast times out the window, unless you're a Paul Tergat.

Last time I did a 10k was the port-tunnel run when all times disappeared into the ether. (Suspected I was around 50 minutes). Hoped for a sub-50 today and got 48.50 so happy with that. Bit disappointing that the splits weren't available and only one water station (unless I missed the others).

Well done everyone , I was up and down the park for ages today on a run, didnt catch anyone the I know and missed the leading group too :(

Similar to paulmcd1973, the last 10k I ran was also the port tunnel race in 2006. Think I was about 53mins in that. Today, I made it around in 43:58, so a PB for me, but could have done much better.

I just felt unprepared. Hadn't done any running this week, so went for a (very stupid) slow 12mile cycle this morning - it was a beautiful morning! Then couldn't find my normal race gear before I left for the park.

Was fine starting off the race. Went through 3miles (almost 5k) in 20:01, and was feeling good. Then the hills started to hurt. Legs just had no kick. Feet got blistered 'cos I hadn't find my normal socks. Wasn't feeling happy from 6k onwards.

Legs gone from 7km, and had nothing left. Still a PB, so can't complain, and a target I know I can beat.

Overall, a good race, good atmosphere, and well organised...

I think they changed the course late on. Just before the 7K mark I expected to go down acres road to the Chapleizord gate but the course went straight across to the upper glen road.

I enjoyed it all the same my open enemy is myself going too fast in the first 5K.
