    Hi all,

I am female and I cycle a guys road bike. Is that weird? I got a bit of stick from the lads I live with over it. I don't think there is any harm in it, is there?

    No harm at all;)

Duffy does it and she looks great!

If it's comfortable (i.e. not feeling too big) that's no problem.

As long as he doesn't mind.

As far as i know the reason 'Ladies' bikes have the lower cross bar is to aid mounting, cycling and dismounting while one is wearing a dress. Now if one will not be wearing a dress whilst bicycling then there is no reason not to burn the bra and cycle a gentlemans bicycle.

That said you shold do a little extra training on the sly and dust the lads next time ye go for a burn (see where they put their sticks then)

There are women-specific road bikes that have slightly different geometries to take into account that women tend to have longer legs and shorter torsos than men, but you wouldn't notice this difference with a casual glance.

No true "road" as in racing bike will have the lowered crossbar thebouldwhacker mentions; the logic behind it is indeed as he describes, for riding in a skirt, but it is a fundamentally weaker shape to make a frame. As most road bike riders do not ride in a skirt it is indeed unnecessary :)

It is possible to ride in a skirt on a man's road bike, although easier with a lowered crossbar, particularly if it is long.

How about a guy on a girls bike? :D

My sister bought a "Man" Trek 1.2 because she preferred the fit, its a 52cm bike. They stuck on a lady saddle for her and it looks fine, though maybe the paint job lacks the flowers and other subtle marketing of the WSD Treks.

Don't worry, I don't think they have to fit you for a penis if you decide to buy a man's bike (a strapadictomy is the medical term I believe :)).

Plus, chances are Tiny is getting a pink bike so if you hang out with him he will act as a handy foil.

Lads, honest queries from women which start off about cycling which consequently end up very quickly with males talking about whether a girl is 'rough' or 'great' tend to put women off posting/participating further in male-dominated internet forums.

I would and I've standards while sober. Get me drunk and I'd probably try it on with Amy Winehouse or buy that bike in Lidl:eek:

I don't see them as 'mens' bike I see them as 'unisex' !! My trek is man's bike. Most of the girls I know cycle men's bike. I got a ladies bike too because I am 5'nothing, and I liked that bike ( my specialized ) ...

... and Duffy is not a cyclist and a sh1t singer.

My other half has a men's Bianchi and loves it. If the bike fits, ride it.

TBH coming as I do from a family with 5 sisters the slow sunday cyclists have the ladies step thru frame where as the commuter, hobby cyclists have the gents high cross bar. Its attitude more than anything. As mentioned earlier competition bikes will have differences but for most mere mortals here its '...6 of one: half dozen of the other...'

My mans trek is great and my man's giant too. I did change the saddle tho. that's it. men's bike are usually nicer anyway :) ( even tho I saw that very nice ladies Felt just yesterday I want )

I had no idea that women were such delicate little flowers. Thankfully you're here to lay your cloak upon that puddle... where would they be without you.

Well that cool. Thanks for all yer comments - I don't really care what people think but the lads were having a go at me.

I seen for the first time 3 boards.ie cyclists wearing boards.ie Jerseys going on Wickham Way (Dundrum) @ 5.05pm yesterday Very impressive indeed! Fair play- I think the girl that was with the guys was on a guys bike???

Anyways guys + girls cheers for the reply.

Could have been myself, Kenmc and Mel headed to the Kippure Time Trial, (photos at the bottom) we left from the RSA building around 5:15 or so. Mel beat most of the guys up BTW (a not entirely unexpected outcome :))

and as for the op's question, once the bike is a good fit, cycle away.

I have one mens bike and one 'ladies specific' bike. Only reason I got the ladies specific one was because of the frame size rather than anything else (couldnt find one small enough). I tend to find that most 'ladies' bikes are lower spec and higher price.

Funny that this is mentioned - I am in this dilemma. I will be at home for a week soon, away from my bike. I don't plan to stop cycling though.

I can borrow my Dad's bike, which is 20 years old, much used, worn chain, worn sprockets, dodgy freewheel and bottom bracket. It's a black hardtail specialized hardrock.

Alternatively, I can borrow my Mum's bike, which is 10 years old, used 4 times, gears shift nicely, etc.

Unfortunately, its a women's bike and is purple. This is not euro.

Maybe I should get a sticker done for my back "my other bike is a man's bike"?
