Passat Wiper Problems

    Hey..
My 99 TDI Passat has developed a most annoying problem.. When I switch on the ignition the wipers will start by themselves, run for 6-8 strokes and then stop at some random position.. Each setting works as it should but again when I switch to the off position they run for a while and then stop anywhere..

    Anyone seen this before ??
I was going to remove the switch and spray some contact cleaner into it but maybe its just knackered...

    Slan.

It sounds like a problem with either the switch or the park function. Also, wiper motors do give trouble on VWs with symptoms not unlike you describe.

Have you had anything fitted recently like an alarm, stereo or sat-nav? I ask this because it reminds of a very unusual problem I came across before on an Audi A3 with symptoms like you describe....

Not too sure but it sounds like the swich mechanisim is knackered. Maybe the contact sensors are worn out on the stalks. This would give the wrong signals to the motor and stop and start etc.

    Bingo !!
The relay indeed... I had a poke about thisafternoon and found the relay tucked away behind the fuses...
Pulled it out and opened it up... There was a suspect/dirty contact on one of the relay's inside, I cleaned this up and sprayed some contact cleaning solution onto it...

Popped it back in and hey presto !! Wipers fully functional again..

Thanks god as it was bloody annoying !!!

Thanks for the suggestions (I found the solution before reading your post, It would have saved me an hour "wiggling" connections)
