Can an Irish license plate be changed?

I'm a regular reader of this board and my understanding of this question is that no, an Irish license plate stays with the car for as long as it stays in the country.

However a colleague of mine swears that a friend told her there's some sort of new arrangement that allows people to change to a different plate (i.e. to reflect their own city or county).

Is there some new arrangement or is this friend purely talking poppycock?

No, You are right. Plate stays with the car for its whole life

As CharlieCroker (Great name BTW) says, the plate stays with the car, even if you were to export it, and reimport it, it gets its old plate again.

I know of a guy who about 15 years ago got an ex cop car changed because he claimed it was being targeted by vandals.

I wonder if yuo export an Irish car and then re import, can you get a new reg on it? It more than likely gets it's own reg back, but I wonder could you apply for a new one...Hmmm

A vehicle on original Irish plates more than 30 years old, may be changed to ZV plates if the owner desires (although it's generally only used for imports).

The only general exceptions that I know of are the aforementioned papal VIP 1 plate and 378 IK which Dublin Bus managed to change to a modern plate in 1988.

Here it is when JP II had it. AFAIK VIP 1 was on another vehicle prior to being sought out for the Pope's Granada.
