Can we offshore our Prision institution?

It costs a lot to keep someone in gaol. According to the last report (2007), it looks like it costs between 90-100K/year. Ireland is an expensive place with inflated wages and an inflated cost of living. I wonder could we find some offshore location where Administering a Prision system would be a lot cheaper.

I'm not talking about sending our citizens to some dark gulag in Siberia. But rather, maintain current standards according to our international obligations (human rights treatys) as we outsource our Prision system to some place like China or India, or some other developing country that is willing.
Basically take the long term prisoners out of Irish gaols and relocate them to a more cost-effective location.
I imagine we could place our own Administers to oversee things (an Irish Gaol in China) but hire local people for prison staff, at local wages, and obviously reap the savings of having a much lower cost of living in those countries.

Maybe we could reduce the amount it costs to keep someone locked-up by 50% who knows?
With the added benefit that the prisoners themselves probably wouldn't be able to acquire drugs or mobile phones and other contra-band as their isolation in some far-flung country makes that less possible.

Lots of other things go offshore, for example IT jobs and manufacturing, so why not our Prison system too?

The Romans had the right idea,

2 men enter, 1 man leaves and gets set on by tigers.

Its a win win situation. The prision population gets lower, you can sell the rights to sky. We get quailty entertainment. And the zoo gets free meat.

The best way to solve crime would be to say that the next person arrested and found guilty will be sharing a cell unsupervised with this guy:

They should send them to Monster Island.

    Needn't worry though. It's just a name. It's actually a peninsula.

    what's a gaol?

sounds like a crazy idea and we need the jobs i guess.. even if it expensive to keep a prisoner.

But people would deliberately get arrested so they could get to meet and be entertained by the legendary Samwell!

    Hmmm.... maybe I'm missing something.

I think we should send them all to Fantasy Island. I heard that creepy midget fella is dead now but I'm sure we could get a replacement for him.

Well we've learned from history and have taken that on board.
They can't take over India, or China, or some other country with a large population and a standing army...

I fully support this proposal so that if someone imprisoned several thousand miles away were to say, appeal their conviction, the righteous hordes of AH would work themselves up into a froth over the cost of transporting this person back securely from Zanzibar or wherever. And then complain about how we aren't giving Irish prisoners to Irish prison officers...

I think I've just divided AH by zero. Like telling them that asylum seekers are the natural prey of paedophiles.

Bring in the death sentance and get rid of most of the certain scum. It should bring down the cost of prisons considerably.

Inishvickillane island, in the Blaskets, would surely do the trick.

It housed a criminal for years.

Convicts should be given a choice between prison time, or 'The Catapult'. If they choose the latter, they'll be catapulted from the roof of Liberty Hall with a trajectory 'likely' to have them land in the Liffey. However, with prevailing winds, prisoner girth, swimming abilities, passing boats, there's still a lot of factors that could see the prisoner injured or killed.

The only drawback I can see is that we might need to rewrite the international charter on human rights to look favourably upon catapulting people from building roofs. Or withdraw from the charter, as a nation, in which case we could just toss a coin at all trials, and heads = death, while tails = catapult.

seems like a great idea and common sense, though im sure its not legal somehow and somebody would pose a loophole in it. however, great ideas and common sense never work in ireland cos people will disagree. moving current criminals is not an option, as people will protest and use the "human rights" nonsense. maybe a suituation where it was revealed that future convicted criminals be housed over seas would be a deterrant, but probably not. at least it would remove opposition to it.

then again, the costs in moving them, flights, over time for staff and paying 5 start hotels for the people to move them, would probably cost more than now.

my solution - cut the costs of running the places. some of those places are like holiday camps. this came from a friend of mine who once spent some time behind bars for a pathetic conviction that he didnt deserve.

You've obviously never been to jail homerjay. I remember a place where my bathwater was sometimes tepid, and Radox was often farcically rationed. It's hell in there. I ain't never going back. Not never....

For murder? Maybe. For traffic violations? At the very least, you'd want to be giving them a far longer poking rod than the murderer was given.

The murderers could give the lesser criminals a piggy-back through the minefield. This scheme wouldn't cost us an arm and a leg either (although the criminals might be short of a limb or two should they survive their little stroll).

If done correctly, initially the only prisoners moved would be those that have already exhausted their Appeals.
Regardless, technology could provide a work-around
    - videotape the prisoner's testimony
    - video conference the prisioner

As for posters that suggest Spike Island or Inishvickillane, those are both within the jurisdiction of the RoI, and thereby would negate any financial benefit. There'd be no point.

Bottle of Smoke has the key stumbling issue:
Bit harsh on families who'd have to travel to visit, they didn't do anything wrong.
I thought that way myself, but I figure when weighing the two:
extra-burden-on-family-of-prisoner vs high-cost-of-incarceration-in-Ireland, i think the balance should tip towrd the public good.

In view of the fact that the first line of defence in the dock, is that the felon's upbringing was somehow responsible for their criminal activity, it's only right that their family should be sent with them to some far-flung hell-hole. That would save even more.

people will protest and use the "human rights" nonsense.

Damn those bleeding hearts and their passion for human rights
    *Shakes fist*

Anyone thought about the effect this would have on Irish prison officers?

Once their sentence is done, would they be shipped back home at the taxpayers expense or would it be a repeat of Devil's Island with large amounts of convicts hanging round the prison and unable to return home?

Just as well for your friend, if his conviction was pathetic, that that 'human rights' nonsense is taken into account here, unlike places like China.

Perhaps your friend didn't mind being deprived of his liberty, but most people wouldn't consider that a holiday.

Ive often thought along the same lines as the OP, especially moreso after that prison officer got caught with some weed and a ton of mobile phones for the lads inside. I'd tend to think that that bent screw is only the tip of the iceberg.

Alas though the families of prisoners would take a case on human rights grounds as they would not be able to visit their scummy offspring. I wouldn't have a problem with that except that their kids wouldnt be able to see their scummy fathers grow old in prison. Which would be a tragedy of the highest proportions.
