For fans of Q-Tip, Prince, Michael Jackson, Daft Punk….
Theophilus London will soon be a name you won’t forget. The groundbreaking, innovative and talented Brooklyn MC is just about to blow up as the face of an exciting new sound for 2009. You heard it here first!
Taking in elements of hip-hop, soul, indie, post-punk & electronica, he dropped a mixtape in January called ‘This Charming Mixtape’ with musician Machine Drum that has been making some serious noise on the blogosphere. Fusing dreamy electro-synth sounds with some sick rapping, it has been described as “pop-drenched hip-hop that's been run through the synthesizer a few dozen times and given a finishing touch by someone like Daft Punk”. To quote one blogger; “He’s like a cooler version of Kanye West!”

By using 80s dance and pop music as a backdrop for contemporary rhymes, Theophilus and Machinedrum are pushing the expectations of rap forward by allowing for a broader area of music to be sampled, the same way 60s and 70s soul music became the genre to pick from for the beat makers of the 90s. In this way, bands like Kano are to Theophilus what James Brown was to Pete Rock.
Lyrically, Theophilus is a hybrid, combining skill-boasting content with a more stylistically southern cadence. He employs the “rain man” method Jay-Z made famous, generally pumping out a song in a half hour without writing a word down. Despite this talent, he knows where to draw the line and is happy to let the music speak for itself where appropriate. Check the free mp3s below and judge for yourself.

Don't miss your chance to catch him in The Twisted Pepper before his inevitable rise to less intimate surroundings!
