15 years is all. probobly out in 10.

a life sentence in this country is a disgrace. and the likes of the that gerard barry fella should have been brought out and shot in my opinion. he doesnt deserve to live. how on earth can 10-15 years be a fiar sentence to what that man done to that poor girl and her parents.

I think you get a few years off that for 'good behaviour', so it's more like 12 or something.

A life sentance should be for life! I dont understand the logic behind that at all. Instead of giving him a 'life' sentance, give him the 15 years or whatever. But to hear people getting 5 life sentances and stuff is just stupid.

As far as I now, life is 7 years at least. You are entitled
to apply for parole after 7 years, or at 7 years.

You gotta' love Ireland's tough sentencing:mad:

    From wikipedia
A life sentence in Ireland lasts for life, albeit not life imprisonment, as not all of the life sentence is generally served in prison custody. The granting of temporary or early release of life sentenced prisoners is a feature of the Irish prison system handled by the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform.

In deciding on the release from prison of a life sentenced prisoner, the Minister will always consider the advice and recommendations of the Parole Board of Ireland. The Board, at present, initially reviews prisoners sentenced to life imprisonment after seven years have been served. Prisoners serving very long sentences, including life sentences, are normally reviewed on a number of occasions over a number of years before any substantial concessions would be recommended by the Board. The final decision as to whether a life sentenced prisoner is released rests solely with the Minister. The length of time spent in custody by offenders serving life sentences can vary substantially. Of those prisoners serving life sentences who have been released, the average sentence served in prison is approximately twelve years. However, there are prisoners serving life sentences in Ireland who have spent in excess of thirty years in custody.

Being found guilty of murder or treason in Ireland automatically qualifies a prisoner for a life sentence.

Will we count you mentioning the the fact that no one mentioned the wife or kids as the obligatory mentioning of the wife or kids?

Methinks that the attaention is diverted temporarily towards the crap justice system we have.

I'm in no way defending what he did but his wife wasn't an angel herself. Not only she told her husband that she's having an affair but even brought the man home. I mean wtf? Couldn't she just file for divorce or something?
Her husband was justly jailed for killing her but this woman wasn't behaving decently herself.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,257 ✭✭✭Squiggle

Life without parole would be an appropriate sentence for any of the murderers mentioned above. I was disgusted to hear Justice Barry White in the Riedo case ask the girls parents to “forgive the Irish nation” for the great pain they (Manuela's parents ) had suffered. WTF - one person committed the crime - any right thinking individual would have massive sympathy for the Riedos. White should have been asking the Riedos for forgiveness for his colleagues who, with their, imo , lenient sentences for Gerald Barry's previous serious crimes, coupled with early release, allowed him to be back out on the streets in the first place.

Barry White is an unfortunate name for a judge, isn't it. You can't imagine him saying anything else to the nation except a plea for more understandin', givin', sharin' and makin' love.

what was she doing rubbing his nose in it like that even the calmest men would
snap under these circumstances but he killed her so jail is the only place for him

Whats wrong with shooting them indoors?

That man should have been convicted of Manslaughter not Murder.

His wife was sneaking an old flame into their family home while he was at work.

    Thats low.

Too much clean up. Outdoors you just need a hole and a hose.

Whoa, that last bit was like something a butch guy would proposition you with in prison.

    Imagine the genders were reversed.

A father was bringing an old girlfriend back to the family home for sex.
His wife confronts him about it and he says that he and his new lover are going to live together.

Wife stabs and kills the cheating husband.

Would a jury sentence this hypothetical mother to life in prison?

    (I doubt it)

They lived a few doors down from my parents house where i grew up. Hippy dippy sounds about right describing her. He seemed fairly normal, straight laced.

First murder in the area. Does that mean i is from da hood foo?

Good to see the macabre jokes back. I was getting worried about the unprecedented outbreaks of piety around here recently.

So going forward, the rule of thumb is:
    • death jokes about pensioners in DIY mishaps and z-list celebs = bad
    • death jokes about brazen, married hussies pushing their poor menfolk to manslaughter = ok.

    Sorted.
