Interesting to see the age differences of the irish riders team compared to the others.

Little bit disingenuous article although have the greatest respect for Paddy Doran.
Most of the teams at this years worlds were development teams .
For example the Britishh team at the olympics were aged 28/35/23 and 22. Hayes at 35 and Newton at 36 were on the fringe of the squad as well.

Also DOL underperformed at this years worlds due to illness. Hes got a sub 4:20 in him which is on the fringe of the medals.

Taylor Phinney is a freak , just one of those exceptional athletes. Just a pity he changed from the Garmin development team to Lances U23 set up :(

Ireland have Sean Downey (19) going forward and there is a talent id system in place. Interesting to see how the new high performance director will prioritise the track (he's just taken up the position)

Good post Robfowl. Paddy is a legend, done a few coaching days with him. His data is interesting, but ultimately age is not necessarily the huge sole limiting factor - it would be a difficult argument to justify considering the age profile of the dominant british A team as you mentioned. I would say that the lack of accessibility to a championship class track would be much more serious (Sams performances last year notwithstanding !), ultimately their riders concentrate on the track, ours concentrate on the road with a few trips to Newport every now and then. You won't win anything until you make an investment...

The ID system is interesting, I was looking at the equipment in one of the testers houses and it seems like a very painful albeit brief process - they look at your height, weight etc.. and then put you through 4 minutes of hell. I was extended an offer to try to it see how I compared, I might give it a bash in another few weeks, I like embarassing myself like that !
