'Free TV' - Aughrim Co Wicklow?

OK so having lost the shackles of NTL/UPC after just moving from Dublin to Wicklow I've no intention of being enslaved by Sky so I'm looking for Free TV!

I've got the Freeview sat receiver all hooked up and working away ..... but the wife still isn't happy, Irish channels are a must.

I've a UHF aerial in the attic via an amplifier which used to work really well in Dublin West off 3 Rock but I'm over the other side of the hills now. Looking at the neighbours UHF aerials they are pointing SE'ish so I'm guessing towards Mount Leinster.

Anyone know if this indeed is the transmitter serving this area or am I pointing in the totally wrong direction!

Also I'm guessing due to the fact I can see where my neighbours aerials are pointed can I assume that the attic location is useless and a scary weekend dangling of a ladder is in store for me!

DTT could also save me the hassle, anyone any pointers where I could find out about availability locations and when?

Loads of DTT info here, you'll need to wait for the offical boxes unless you have a tv with a built in DTT tuner or you could buy a "grey" box

    cheers Mike,

I suppose I should have mentioned I have a DVB-T MPEG4 box. I did try a quick scan on saturday when I was desperately trying to get the match! But no channels found ..... need to read up on my Aerials etc!

My folks live up that way, you probably couldn't get anything only Mt. Leinster from there, here's a far better value aerial that should do the trick:

I spotted that Argos have some indoor DTT ariels, how effective they are is another matter.

Forget about indoor aerials in Aughrim...

Also there is NO SUCH thing as a DTT or Digital Aerial. That's just marketing.

That part of the country was always a pain for RTE.
They had to put in repeaters/transponders to service the valley

Actually some of the aerials in Aughrim will be pointing at Presely wales!
You might get Kippure in Aughrim village.
Mt Leinster would be southwest of Aughrim not southeast.

The best bet is shock horror! call to one of your neighbours-tell them who you are and ask them for to see their RTE/TV3 etc.Look at their aerial set up in detail

You could ring Joe in arklow on 0402 32777.
He's been putting up aerials for years including Aughrim and still is,even though he's in his 70's now.
He's not dear at all and despite his age knows his stuff very very well.

OP wants DTT so Kippure is no good to him.

Well actually I think it's free tv the op wants so I think it's safe to assume that he'll have to make do with analogue or nothing depending on what he gets.
He wont be getting RTE or TV3 at all free via any other method if dtt is not available.
Mt Leinster may be blocked by the rather substantial croghan mountain to the west of aughrim.
His best bet I think is to ring joe ryan on the number I gave or to call round to a few of his neighbours.

I stand corrected, it appears as if Kippure has just started broadcasting DTT, see my other thread:

There's also no such thing as a Freeview sat receiver (see post 1). Freeview is DTT. Freesat is FTA satellite.

Cheers guys. Still not managed to get time to get the aerial outside and a little higher. But the neighbours aerials are SW not SE as I originally posted ... sorry get my E & W mixed up!

Croghan is 4 miles directly south with Mt Leinster 25 miles SW so hopefully I can see around it!

Analogue will do for the irish channels for the minute. Reception is watchable at the moment for all 4 Irish channels even with the UHF aerial in the attic so should ge better when I get it outside.

Will update when I get sorted incase anyone else is around this way.
