Need a good flash unit for Nikon D40X

I have a Nikon D40X and need a good flash unit for it. I want to get something that I can keep and use when I upgrade to a D90 or better in the future (next 12 months or so). I am looking at the SB-600 or SB-800 (or newest SB-900). Any advise on which to go for? Any good/bad points about each that I should consider?
