Well, it finally happened. My snare skin which has been going for years and years and years and didnt need replacing finally bit the dust. got a scratch on it right in the middle at one of the gigs two weeks ago and went in practice. Gutted. Was doing so well too!

anyway... so now i need a new one. thing is i havent a clue about them! Brand? Type? Anything?

What im looking for is something to fit my 14" Brass Pearl Sensitone II Snare. Type of music is rock and metal that i play on it but ive started a lot of blues stuff too. what do yo recommend? At price anything up to 40 quid.

    Thanks :)

Personally, I quite like the coated Evans ST dry head, it's got little perforations around the rim, never found a Remo head I was happy with. I use it for rock metal and blues and other bits and pieces too, it's nice.

Evans Power Center Reverse Dot? Been looking around a bit today and wondering what these things are like...

took a look at that, but would that not take all the warmth out of the snare? This is a brass snare after all and has lots of warmth in it...

Any idea what the head you had on it was?

I like to have quite a harmonic snare tone, so I find I generally opt for lighter heads, like a Remo Coated Ambassador. The Coated Emperor is a bit heavier, and has stronger low tones by comparison. I really liked them on toms, so I'm thinking I'll try one on snare next time around. I've never really taken much to Evans, but it's a matter of personal taste.

I've never played a brass snare for any amount of time (I have a maple free floating snare), so I'm not sure how that might impact on the head choice. I think the shell and the actual tuning of the head is more important in any case.

It might be an idea to bring the broken head with you when you go shopping and see if you can find a head that is of a similar thickness etc.

You'll probably find quite a difference with any new head, even another of the same. Old heads tend to dull down quite a bit after a couple of weeks of play, and then gradually get flatter sounding as time goes on. That would be my experience anyway.

There's a whole lot of heads to experiment with - I suggest you try six different heads over the course of a year and see what takes your fancy. :)
