Insurance question - death of policyholder

Quick question...a relation of mine recently died. We are wondering what the status of his car insurance is now. I am not a direct relative so I am not in a position to ring the insurance company myself and the family are not quite ready to do it themselves.

We need to move the car but my insurance company told me that I would not be insured on it due to the death of the policy holder. The policy holders wife does not have a licence so we cannot get it transferred to her either and she is not sure what she wants to do with it. Does anyone know if it is even covered right now for theft just in case something happens before we get it all sorted out? I have searched the insurance company website but cannot find any information about this kind of situation. I know a phone call to them will sort it out but as I said, I am just trying to get some info for one of the direct family until they are ready to start making those kind of phone calls.

    Thanks.

Ring the insurance company and ask them - it's a general question, so they'll be able to answer without giving out any confidential information.

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

If the car urgently needs to be moved, try and get someone who has comprehensive cover to drive any car to move it. I.e. a dealer / mechanic.

Had a similar situation last year, father in law died. His wife not a driver. Car was insured in my wife's name as her father's policy ceased on his death. No theft cover. The ownership of car does not have to be transferred to insure it, but the important thing is for the family to contact insurance company. It will be dealt with sympathetically, it happens all the time.

If the car needed to be moved, someone can transfer their own insurance temporarily, leaving their own car uninsured. I've done it when leaving my own car in for servicing.
