If you're looking for an electric I got a lovely Squier Stratocaster a few months ago as my first electric. Mine came from thomann:

    Affinity Strat

Its well built and has a lovely sound (no fret buzz at all). It has had no modifications so far. The action was perfect straight out of the box (for me anyway). The only thing I changed was the strings.

Try something from the bottom end of the Yamaha FG series. They have a nice tone and won't leave too big a hole in your wallet.

If you're just starting out playing electric guitar I would recommend a Squier. Don't forget to budget for an amp, cables, plectrums and spare strings too :).

If you're starting out on acoustic I would recommend a Takamine.

Hi, Try to find a shop that will let you or a friend try out all the guitars. Even different models of the same guitar can sound quite different. Any shop that doesn't let you try their guitars should be avoided. Thomann's prices may seem attractive but you can't hear them before buying. This is very important with acoustic guitars.

Epiphone has some great guitars in your price range.
Maybe an Epiphone Dove, or L-00. Gibson makes them in their own factory in China.

I own high end Martin and Gibson guitars but I also have an Epiphone L-00, which is similar to my Gibson Blues King. Not quite as good a sound as the Blues King, because the sides and back are laminate, but just as well made at one tenth the cost, and a smaller body size that fits women and smaller guys.
