Is 2MB the maximum available satellite broadband speed? All the providers seem to advertise this as the fastest package, but surely if they can provide that speed then they can provide higher speeds. I know the speeds gets ridiculously slow at weekends and evenings but just wondering about max speeds.

    Thanks

SkyDSL (nothing to do with SkyBSB) once did offer up to 16Mbps download, it was a one way service. I think they now offer 24Mbps but at something silly like 50c/Mb.

That doesn’t sound like a sat service, that sounds more like a WLR agreement. Are you sure they were not just selling someone else’s copper? (DSL or digital subscriber line normally refers to a copper path).

SkyDSL (an misleading name, but what good are Consumer agencies here?) is a download accelerator for Dialup. You pay for your phone line rental and dialup time.

The acclerator is basically a PC satellite receiver + LNB + dish. It's an overpriced poor service as the dialup phone line costs are so high in Ireland you can get a Real satellite service from Digiweb or NBB cheaper if you ditch the phone line.

Indeed no connection whatsoever with BskyB / Sky Broadcasting or DSL technology.

You CAN get up to 45Mbps satellite speed. Probably for about 15,000 Eur a month :)

Satellite bandwidth is as expensive as it gets. Domestic satellite is typically 70:1 to 500:1 contention as it's not regulated (no Terrestrial BB is supposed to be more than 48:1, Mobile isn't Broadband, and in fact is licenced primarily for phone calls so has no contention limit).

Does anyone know what the contention is in reality (considering take up cannot really be that high...unless im mistaken)? Wouldn't having a very low download limit marginalise contention issues?

Since a single transponder covers half of Europe typically
(SkyDSl on 8W, http://www.lyngsat-maps.com/maps/ab2_eur.html They are also on 33E)

with a typical transponder peak rate of maybe 40Mbps or less after FEC...

Contention on cheap Domestic and especially download acelerator Satellite services is terrible. Because of the geographic coverage takeup doesn't have to be much to give terrible performance.

    see www.lyngsat.com
It doesn't have the UPLINK footprints for the two way services, but does have most of the downlink services and footprints.

All transponders with data have @ prefix and PURPLE BACKGROUND
