You can get fairly good details here.

By the looks of the tools spoon or fork handles mihght do, but I'm not 100% on that so don't force it, you might make mess it up!!

cheers, saw those things...they have little hooks on the end (kinda covered by the writing) which you need to pull the stereo out...so fork handles etc wouldnt work!

Sorry.. you can get them for about 2 or 3 quid of ebay if that's any use!

A really thin butter knife on each side is enough to push the retaining clips down and allow you to pull out the radio.

I went to an audio place in town hoping to buy the keys. The guy was sound enough to come out to the car and just release it.

Came back a few weeks later to fit a whole system. What goes around :)

well bought the keys today but the left hand one wouldnt budge...looks like i'll have to get the professional job! (or maybe someone would release it for me)...do you know the name of that audio place in town? I got a quote yesterday of €65 to remove it!!!seems a bit excessive!

Why do people ask for advice and then ignore it and spend money? I took this little pic as i have a VW radio handy and i'm bored :)

Insert a thin (read cheap and flexible) butter knife from the top down like the arrow pointing inward is showing, bring the knife downwards so it is over the clip as per the straight line and then pull the radio out, obviously you need 2 knives 1 on each side : )

Any VW dealer can supply you with the correct tools for a few € through the spare parts dept. The problem is finding a partsman that is good enough to be able to locate the part number.....

Eh maybe its hitting off the clip? you need to get over and down on the clip to be abler to slide the radio out.

I got my one out without those hooks. There is a little bit of sideways play in the stereo. Stick the blade of the knife down the side of the radio and gently prise it to the opposite side. Pull it (the radio) out a bit, then put a knife in the other side and tease it back the other way. It should be about 5mm out at that stage. Put your finger inside the tape player and pull it out the rest of the way, or, grab both sides of the radio and pull it.

If you take off the fascia to the left and right of the radio it makes it much easier to get out IIRC.

Another thing, when you are installing you're radio, the yellow wire goes to the red, and the red goes to the yellow. Some one else might be able to explain this, but that seems to be the way.
