Thailand - rainy season?

I have heard mixed reports on the rainy season in Thailand... I will be flying into Phuket towards the end of April and plan on staying around the islands - Phi Phi, Phuket & Samui until beginning to mid june. While I have heard the rainy season starts in May has anyone actually been there in May & June and is it actually bad enough to avoid these islands?

Also I will be alone for the first 5 weeks of my trip in Thailand just wondering which of these islands would be the best to concentrate on? I have heard Phuket is very sleazy and not the type of place to go alone (im female).

    Any advice/tips appreciated :)
