How to divide monthly expenses?

If my partner earns 1,600e per month.
And I earn 700e per month.
And our monthly rent is 375e.

What maths formula do we use to calculate how much we can both pay relative to our earnings?

This is probably really basic but its driving me mad - I dont know whether I should be using ratios/fractions or percentages.

    Thanks in advance!

    375 x (700 / ( 1600 + 700 ) ) = your share

    375 x ( 1600 / ( 1600 + 700 ) ) = partners share

    7/23 for you .... 16/23 for him/her.

ratios, fractions and percentages are all pretty much the same thing, when you get down to it.

In any case, normal arithmetic is the way to go, as leeroybrown has demonstrated.

I think you mean 7/23 for the op and 16/23 for the op's oh.

23 is a prime number, you can't reduce either fraction any more.

If you make him a sammich every day, your rent should drop accordingly, imo

50 50. It's not like your partner takes up more space then you.

    basic algebra is complicated? wow.

And yeah, if the two of them were simply roommates, it would be a 50/50 split. However, if they are sharing finances, then it should be based on earnings and means.

your right it is fairly basic,
your one person and he's also one person. If you add them together that makes two people in total!
If you then divide the amount of persons you are (1), by the total number of people (2), you get the fraction that you should be paying. 1/2!!!
