Sony Announcement Tuesday

Apparently sony has somethin big planned for tuesday. Ladies and Gentlemen, start your speculation!!!!
Sony dropped Kotaku a line to let us know that something big was going down on Tuesday, March 31st. Could it be the long-rumored price cut is finally upon us? Or could it be something completely different? Rumors have been doing little twirly things all over the internet over the past few weeks regarding a potential PlayStation 3 price cut, and while our first thought was "Why would they announce it several days after GDC?", apparently they are indeed announcing something several days after GDC. Go figure.
We're leaning towards a price cut, but we've got a sneaking suspicion that it's the PlayStation 2 dropping to $99, and not a cut for the PlayStation 3.
All we know so far is that they're announcing something. There's only one thing to do now. Let the wild speculation begin! What do you think/hope/dream Sony is announcing?

it's prob the price drop , but i already have one , so thats really no concern to me , guess we'll just have to wait and see

Surely its a PS3 price drop. I just don't think a PS2 price drop would count as major news.

I got mine fore 325e up North. With a price cut you could end up getting one up North for well under 300e (I doubt the price cut will be 100e).

Well for the in game XMB & store update videos n majigger were released to show people what it was gonna be like before going live. So a FW update combined with a new fiscal year might be enough to warrent it.

Or theyre building hype to take the piss. They never have been the most normal bunch

Id also say mkv is slim for now with piracy concerns since theyve such a vested interest in blu-ray

I think the next firmware is supposed to do something good.

Just remebered: in game themes, voice messages, and trophy auto sync. And faster in game xmb loading.
The or the price cut. Or maybe a new PSP?

    And I hope it's the proper PSP2.

Western Media have this box that plays all media files. You just hook it up to your TV via HDMI-looks extremely cool. 99E from Komp.

If they don't release a mkv update, unlikely as you say, then I might pick one up.

Im hoping for a firmware that will enable ps2 emulation for the 40GB and newer consoles. That would be great.

Metal Gear solid 5 is being announced in april or may so its not that.

Any sources for the MGS5 announcement? I thought that guy (can't remember his name) that made MGS said that he wasn't going to do anymore.

I'd think it is safe to say a new MGS is on the way

Doubt it is about a new MGS, that was alread half-announced, weren't it?

I am betting it is that WiiS360 console I have been praying for.

Kojima has already said he will never made a new MGS4 game. He said this 3 times in fact, once before he made MG3, once before he made MGS4 and the last time was after he made MGS4. He jusy said another MGS game is in the works at the GDC keynote. I hope he remembers to add gameplay this time.

Hmm I read on qj a few days ago, that they were just adding an extra controller to the PS3 bundle instead of a price cut..

I think/hope it is a much bigger store intergration like in the U.S.

That would be awesome.. Like we could buy movies etc. Not that I ever buy movies..

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 524 ✭✭✭Penis Eye

i reckon it could be the new video store for the eusopean psn! the one where u can rent/buy hi def movies like the xbox store!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,721 ✭✭✭Otacon

Probably a price cut across all three platforms, PSP, PS2 and PS3.

Otherwise its an announcement for a PSN release schedule, like 'Spring Fever' but for the the summer, obviously!

    Or something else entirely...

I have a feeling it could be a price cut alright but seeing how weak sterling is, i doubt any price drop would affect the UK.On TVs and such, Sony has been raising UK prices recently. Comparative to the rest of Europe theyre already gettin the ps3 on the cheap. i hope this brings us in line with the UK

MGS5? It's gonna be about Raiden and not about Snake, Snake should be 10 feet under by now.

The sequel to Shadow Of The Colossus perhaps?

Hoping it's a new update, or the video store that someone talked about earlier. Couldn't be bothered if it's a price drop because, well, I already have a PS3 (duh). I think that announcing the new PSP is unlikely, because it's apparently being announced at E3 this year.

So fingers crossed for something good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,509 ✭✭✭NotorietyH

I'm gonna guess at the launch of the video store for Europe and I think I read recently that the next Pixeljunk game is going to be announced soon too. Don't think that's big enough on it's own, so it could be a slew of release date announcements for PSN games, like Fat Princess an' all too.

So I'll just keep it general and say the announcement's going to revolve around the PSN.

E3 for Team ICOs announcement id say

I'm guessing it's going to be PS2 at $99. It'd be great if it was all three PlayStation systems coming down in price though.

I wish it was back compat for ps2 on all systems but i know its not going to be. Forgot about ps2 when ordering my new samsung HDMI monitor. Got one without a composite/component or scart port. No ps2 for me on this screen and i have still have dragon quest 8 :(

GothPunk is correct. All signs point to a PS2 price drop tp $99.

Yep the console is still selling for sony so why not milk a cow you know still has some milk. Two ps2 games were in the top 5 for the Japanese charts last week.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,761 ✭✭✭GothPunk

The PS2 at $99 next week or the week after could also steal some thunder from the DSi release here and in the States. Probably not by much though. Sony should have used a cheap PS2 to compete with the Wii (with more 'Wii-like' PS2 games) a long time ago.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,726 ✭✭✭✭noodler

God I hope thats not the complete announcement.

My PHAT is still going strong and I may crack it open for a go off Persona 4.

It would be a smart move though, gives people the alternative cheap option-I'd take a PS2 over a Wii any day of the week.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,509 ✭✭✭NotorietyH

PS2 dropping in price doesn't seem like a 'big' announcement to me, but I suppose it's not my definition of the word that counts, it's Sony's :PI imagine most major earth-shattering announcements are saved for E3.

I hereby predict that Sony will announce a new machine that literally can shatter the earth at E3.

Well Blizzard have confirmed that MS is working on the next xbox, so maybe it's a response to that effect... Hardware release for the ps3 that will enable us to create robots with perfect AI at home!!!

Well 'The Turk' was built using bits of some 'Playstations' as Andy Good put it, heh heh. I do like The Sarah Connor Chronicles!

Funny thing is, Sony did patent some robot thingy that interacts with the PS3 or PS2...

They would ever announce new hardware would they? The PS3 isn't out that long and still costs a bomb,a new console might not go down so well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,761 ✭✭✭GothPunk

It's not going to be new hardware. Most likely it's the PS2 price drop or maybe a 'Playstation Family' price drop.

This announcement is being hyped absolutely everywhere as a PS3 related announcement when the original Kotaku announcement makes no such claim. It's a 'Sony' anouncement. People are setting themselves up to be disappointed, most likely it's not a biggie. Sure, a PS3 price cut would be cool, but most of the people viewing this thread probably own a PS3 already so we'll only benefit by having more people to play with online, stuff like that.

A weird but totally desireable comboination of a George Foreman Grill and a Playstation 3. Seen at 2DayBlog, this PS3 was made into a functional grill but leaves out the gaming experience. It would be a lot cheaper and less painful if they just went out and bought a grill instead of bringing the demise of the PS3 game console.

If it is a price cut, I will go mental. We want some weird, cool thingamagig!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,761 ✭✭✭GothPunk

Apparently it's not a PS3 price cut anyways.

However, the last time there was a PS3 price cut Sony denied it in an official statement and then there was a price cut soon after. Usually Sony say 'no comment on rumour and speculation' so based on past events an official denial could be seen as confirmation. We all know the PS3 is going to get a price cut sometime this year anyways so it's kind of boring news for me. I wish it was a cool new firmware or something, but it won't be. Oh well.
