Who should take over the Late Late?

...or has it had its day?

Personally I think Patrick Kielty should run it, but I fear RTÉ will give the gig to an insider so Tubridy or even Gerry Ryan will take it over.

My money's still on Dave Fanning from the last time.

No guests either, just 3 hours of Dave Fanning talking. That'd do me.

    Anybody but tubridy please.

This was one of the worst kept secrets ever

Paddypower has been taking bets on who will replace Pat Kenny in 2010 for over 10 months now

    Ryan Tele tuberty of course

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,559 ✭✭✭refusetolose

gerry ryan would be the man

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,536 ✭✭✭Brimmy

It will be Tubridy. Failing that it'll be Ryan.

    I'd rather see someone.......you know.........good though.

I could actually really get behind Kielty and would bring a fresh appraoch (and charisma) to the position. Something the show desparately needs.

I think it has past its sell by date, but I would dread to think what RTE would dream up as a replacement.

Give Eamonn Dumphy a chance i say

I can't believe it can be anyone else but Turbridy. He is very well connected at RTE and his show, especially in recent weeks, has been very entertainment-led - maybe RTE have realised that Friday night is not the time for current affairs and for a lighter, more fun show.

Remember Questions & Answers is going so maybe Kenny's new show will be a replacement for that. I know he is hated for his wooden performance on entertainment shows but on the radio his almost scientific approach works well. I think he will be an excellent current affairs host.

The real question is who will get the Saturday show? I think Turbridy is very straight and mainstream. Imagine a show with Hector? It would be great especially if it was live.

Also with luck RTE has the money to stage more of the shows outside of Dublin. I always thought the BBC was too London-centric but RTE is incredibly Dublin focussed. I would love to see some shows in locations across the country - when did you last see a live show from Cork or Galway for example - never mind Athlone or Sligo?

Yeah - but not those ridiculous cringeworthy audience participation segments.
He should hang his head in shame

What confuses me is that i tried to post a reply to a thread on this topic but it disappeared and only to be replaced by a moderators post on same topic ??

    Turbity has the depth,
He just has had to hide it to not be a repeat of P.K,s radio show or be a copy of the lls,He may simply by age need a few more years though,G Ryan often too vulgar,Miriam I do not think would be interested, any bets Tom McGurk or rotating presentors for a season or two? May,be it will just be replaced by a movie, after all the celtic tiger found a nation willing to sell it,s soul, loss of Cosy family winter nights all watching lls is history. We Irish proved to be nothing special at all when the dollars called us

It will be Tubridy...and to be honest he is pretty good! But can he conform to the serious persona the LLS uses.
I hope he gets it and it can be a more relaxed effort. I can easy see Ryan having a laugh with kids on toy show, without being a terrified tool as Kenny has been for last 10 years!
And just in general making it more fun while still capable of a serious chat if needs be!
I just can't see beyond Ryan for this role...any other ideas?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,641 ✭✭✭✭Elmo

It should be laid to rest IMO

But if they have to get someone new, I would suggest someone new.

So he is taking over from John Bowman, he should have returned to CA along time ago.

Kenny leaves Late Late for new programme

Just incase anyone thinks this is a joke, which I did1!

It will be good to see Pat Kenny go back to something he is good at. Who will replace him? Probably Tubridy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,726 ✭✭✭✭DMC

I cannot believe Paddy Power is so long on Tubridy... 13/8 atm, he should be odds-on.

RTÉ will play it safe. They did that the last time. And there deffo seems to be a line of succession. Kenny succeeded Byrne after he stepped down, where he hosted Saturday nights for years, earned his spurs so it were. Likewise Tubridy. He has made it known that he wanted to be on Friday nights.

Personally, I don't like him that much but not intensely, unlike others in RTÉ.

Two points to bear in mind. RTÉ saved money when Kenny was not immediately replaced on Saturday nights, it was 2004(?) before Tubridy came on air, a full 5 years or so. An opportunity to save money.

Also... I wonder did Gerry Ryans volte-face on his pay have something to do with Kenny's impending retirement??

I have place a modest sum on Tubridy in Paddy Powers... get it on.

BTW, Joe Duffy is value at 33/1 :D

I have suffered through the odd Pat Kenny show but if I have to watch Gerry Ryan well that's the end as far as I am concerned.
Tubridy is a good presenter but he would have to change his approach to take on the more heavy weight stuff.

    Hi,

Why is everyone overlooking Mariane Finnucane or Mary Kennedy or Blaithnad ni Cofiadh (stop it, down boy! something about red hair whispering sweet nothings as gaeilge)

They should Def keep the show its Iconic and be daring with the show's presenter - Shirley Templebar!!! (Graham Norton works)

I'd give it to Tommy Teiren, he'd wake up boring old conservative RTE.

Let's be wild and radical and NOT give it to some old RTE hack who probably already has a TV show and a radio show already.

All you need is someone who can crack a few jokes, ask a few questions and listen to the answers. The guests are what makes the Late Late entertaining, not whatever sycophant is hosting it. God knows it survived with Kenny who has to be the worst interviewer the world has ever seen.

    scrap the late late

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,063 ✭✭✭ParkRunner

I think Matt Cooper would do a very good job at it, less B list celebs on it then at least and more guests who have something half relevant to contribute. And please god even one week where an employee of RTE is not rolled out for a chat.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31 wuzzik

Agreed, scrap it. There must be a host of less mind numbing option to replace it with.

    A Team re-runs.
Dubbed english language documentaries. (Irish accented voice overs)
Re-runs of Ireland AM. (Why limit the re-runs to Saturday/Sunday mornings.)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,789 ✭✭✭✭keane2097

I'd be happy for Matt Cooper to get it as well. I wouldn't be happy for them to give it to a Graham Norton or Patrick Kielty character as you'd then be turning the show into purely entertainment, which I think neither (and probably no-one else for that matter) would do as well as Jonathan Ross which is on at the same time. Keep the mixture of Current Affairs and Entertainment imo - it's a tried-and-tested format and one which I for one certainly enjoy...

Jonathan Ross isn't as good as he used to be, I find he is a one trick pony with his guests.

Matt Cooper is too boring it would basically be like giving TLLS back to Pat Kenny good on News bad on Entertainment. You need to be able to do both on TLLS.

He's still far better at what he does than anyone else around I can think of. I'd hate to end up with the same show on two channels on a friday nightwith different presenters.

Matt Cooper actually isn't half as bland as Pat Kenny. What I like about him is he doesn't treat his guests with this kind of hushed reverence Pat Kenny seems to have - Cooper is like "You're on my show, you'll answer my questions to a degree with which I am satisfied". I've been listening to the Last Word for years, and while it is certainly broadly CA based there is plenty of entertainment value in there that Matt is not uncomfortable with.

You have to remember that RTÉ aren't competing with the BBC so they shouldn't care what the national broadcaster of another country has on the air.

That's why I dislike Matt Cooper he always always interrupts people with that same old line "Answer the question minister, look we have already heard that and I have given you a chance to state that now I will reask my question .....? Look minister your not answering the question". Guess what Matt we know he isn't answering the question perhaps you could work around the question and fool the person into answering it.

Also it is different on the Radio, even Pat Kenny is more relaxed on the radio in terms of Entertainment.

Will Leahy would be my suggestion.

If Matt Cooper got the Late Late, he'd have no guests to interview after a while.

Hard news is not required on the Late Late, but a bit of light and shade is.

You think competing with a similar show is a reason to ignore the format of that show

Yes if TV3 had a show like Jonathan Ross every Friday Night and it did exceptionally well and the host was liked by the audience, RTÉ should try to produce something else in a different format which will be like by people who don't like the TV3 show.

    Smart money's on Tubridy.

Fun money's on Grainne Seoige in a giant cake. :P

Actually, who cares? I'm not going to start watching it just because they get a new host (see Gay Byrne -> Pat Kenny)

They should change the name, 9:30pm isn't Late Late unless you're a 7yo or Amish.

Tubridy seems a dead cert - He's short odds with the bookies but I'll still have a punt on it tomor.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 352 ✭✭dave98

    Mariane Finnucane
    miriam o callaghan
    Matt Cooper

I'd hate to see Ryan Tuberty getting it. It would be the end for the late late if Gerry Ryan got it. And as for Dave Fanning - oh dear god no!

I'd like to see George Hook in the chair, now that would be entertaining.

Don't like O'Callaghan - she's like Kenny, good at the political stuff but not at the social/light entertainment (though slightly better than Kenny alright) . Plus she's the DG's missus, isn't she?!

What is with Tubridy and his connections in RTE? Is it the FF background or what?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,391 ✭✭✭Captain-America

The Irish Times today seemed certain Miriam O' Callaghan would get it, which would be a balls. She's about as boring as Pat.

I want Tubridy to get it. There's nobody in Ireland as good as him for the job.

She is married to the new Director of TV not the DG. Anyway she wouldn't be good. She would be wasted on the show.

Did Gay Byrne or Pat Kenny have any connections before getting the show?

A little too much ass licking going on but it was
