While many commentators in the mainstream in recent years have commented that boxing is dying - is it my imagination that boxing popularity is on an upswing again ? Boxing has always done well in recessionary periods.

Currently in ireland we have our olympic fighters and a bunch of young pros that are potentially world class (sutherland, lee, duddy, macklin etc).
We have bernard and katie at world level (note : at peak times almost 750k ppl watched dunne on rte). have things ever been so good for irish boxing ?

in the uk we have all the hype over their olympic boxers and beijing sucesses. in europe, germany is seeing a resurgance in boxing attendances no doubt helped by the Klitschos basing their promotions there. in the states we have more stacked cards and some mega fights coming in the future.

what do ppl think . is boxing as a sleeping giant making a comeback ??

well it couldnt have got any lower.

If it isnt experiencing an upswing now, with the Olympics and BD the "world champ", then it never will.

Oh its really not that bad !
They've been saying that boxing is dead for decades.
It's just a well used phrase now.

The thing that killed boxing was PPV , and subscription channels.
It took the sport away from working class people , and only well off people could afford sky and the likes 10 years ago.

The internet... particularly youtube and a half dozen boxing sites re-established the sport and made available to the masses !
coupled with live streams , its got a massive fan following now .

The business side of boxing is totally fcuked up though.
Monetary greed has prevailed over everything , and whilst promoters are notorious , now we have most boxers chasing purses instead of titles.

Its definitley on the up now, certainly this side of the world. Cards need to be more stacked and the fans need to be listened too. Id also like to see more boxing on regular tv, which is happening a bit.
