Depends how far and how hard you are running as well as your objectives. Generally speaking though if you eat you should leave between 30 and 60 mins before doing any running.

If it were me I'd grab a glass of OJ, out the door and eat when I got back.

    cheers,

I've a good circuit thats about 5 miles, round killiney and dalkey so about 40% of it is uphill,20% flat and 20% downhill. at the moment its taking about 45-55 mins depends. home and showered by 8:15, then breakfast and out the door.

i'm cutting out the cardio on the gym to concentrate more on the weights. so hopefully will get out 2 or 3 mornings a week.

I run before work and leave the breakfast till I get to work.

If I eat I generally get cramps if I run within 2 hours of eating..

It will be a very individual thing I'd say

Up until last week, I'd been running two mornings mid week before work. 3 mile runs and would just wake up, light stretch and out the door. I'd then eat brekkie once home and after shower. Even on a weekend, I've run as much as 10miles with no brekkie and then eat when home - though I'd prefer to have brekkie before running that long. Anything up to 3-5 miles would be fine. It probably differs for everyone though and some trial and error is needed...

I eat a small amount of cereal and a cup of tea before a run, finishing it maybe 15 mins before I go. It works better for me than just liquid, ie juice or water. I feel weak after fasting all night, and personally I work better with a small amount of food inside. As long as I warm up nicely, I dont seem to get a problem with it coming up my neck. :) I just couldnt do it without food, so this works for me. I suppose it depends on you, some people might get heartburn or feel ill. Also, hard sprints make me feel like puking anyway, so if your intending to do a hard session, maybe avoid much food.

*edit, I get a stitch the odd time, but it always goes away with a certain kind of breath rhythm I use, and otherwise I never cramp up on a run. The only time I had bad, bad, stomach problems on a run, was a day I hadnt eaten!
