Ok, its friday and I have gone bananas on the excel. I hope my boss doesn't view boards and if she does doesn't know who Tingle is.

Anyway, using my 2008 Combined Irish Rankings for athletes I have devised a very cunning ranking system for clubs. Using the data from the individual rankings, clubs are scored on the following 5 categories with 10pts max on offer in each catergory

    - Age: 10pts if a club have a ranked athlete in from Senior, U23 & Junior ranks
    - Event: 10pts if a club have athletes ranked across the 8 various event catergories (Sprints, Hurdles, Middle, Long, Throws, Jumps, Walks, Multi)
    - Gender: 10pts if a club have men and women ranked.
    - Rankings: 1 pt for every athlete a club has ranked (to a max of 10pts)
    - Elite: 5 pts for every athlete a club has in the top 10 here(to a max of 10pts)

So 50pts is the most you can get. And the winners are:

    Dundrum South Dublin

Well done to the southside Ladies and Ladyboys.

No argument there really, best allround club in the country. KCH and Clonliffe second. Clonliffe lots of ranked athletes but no women which if they had would get them close to DSD. KCH have great diversity - thrower, Juniors, U23, sprinters, Middle distance, men and women. May struggle to maintan 2nd in 2009 if Cuddihy and O' Keeffe aren't competing. Expect to see Ferrybank move from 8th up the table in 2009.

Anyway, here is the full list and this will be done in tandem with the 2009 Athlete Rankings here
to produce a 2009 Club Rankings.

Great work Mr Tingle, very interesting. Funny how, working mainly with juniors, I would imagine the likes of Fingallians and Bros Pearse would be more prominent. Can't argue with DSD however who cover the spectrum.

I'm looking forward to other comments on this.

Its not perfect and its more focused on the senior athletes I'll admit but at that level it does reflect fairly true I'd say and would be broadly in line with placings table from the national seniors. If I went deeper with the individual rankings to say top 250 of all athletes we would then pick up the clubs who have a broader spread and lots of good juniors but then the problem is that many of the top clubs would start to get 10's in all categories. As it stands the standard for a junior athlete to get a ranking is pretty tough so we are missing out on lots of them. Other good allround clubs don't get ranked, Menapians are low yet have a great diversity in their club while women's league champions Tir Chonaill have no ranked athlete. Probably a sign of the their nature of a true club as they have no real stars yet great club ethic.

Good work Tingle...as you could probably guess from the name, plenty of room for improvement ;) How did you sort the rankings within the same number of points?

You'll be ranked joint 30th with the other clubs on 10.58pts. Thats the minimum score by the way if you have one athlete ranked in one category.

Cheat Note: This season get McCarthy to do a 400 as he'll easily get a ranking there and that will boost your Event score up to 2.50 (as you'll have Sprint and Middle ranking) and move you up the table;)

Thanks for the advice, will explain the importance to David of doing a 400!! Things must be very quiet this afternoon looking at the other fine work you are posting ;)
