Hygienist - is there a point?

    I had periodontal disease and couldn't get braces until I was treated by a periodontist. Got the work done and was given the all-clear to get my braces, she scheduled me for a year's check-up and an appointment with a hygienist next month. This place isn't cheap, it'll cost me €75 to see the hygienist. I have my braces and my orthodontist was delighted when she heard of my upcoming appointment. But what's the point? I'm not too sure what a hygienist actually does, tbh, but it doesn't seem relevant.

    A friend of mine is a hygienist. As I understand it, she carries out a certain amount of work which the periodontist would otherwise have to do in her absence.

    As far as I know, people with periodontal disease have to get fairly regular check ups as well.

    I only know some details as to the type of work that they do but there is a certain amount of stripping cement from teeth and other things that I can't remember. They also assess and diagnose problems.

    I don't think that it's going to be a cosmetic exercise, if that is what you are asking. It seems to me that you will be getting periodontal treatment from the hygienist.
