RTE are doing a very short piece on Boards. As part of that i'm doing a podcast which will be film (yeah, I dont know why either).

The podcast is one of Boards own podcasts with Monkey Fudge and he's canvassing for questions in that thread.

So far most of them are pretty "odd"!

I don't know whether to ask here or there :-/
    Move if necessary.

How many hobbies have you pursued as a result of boards?

What does boards mean to you , is it more business or pleasure?

Have you ever wanted to give it all up ? If so what kept you going?

How big a part has boards played in your life?

What changes do you see for boards in the foreseeable future?

How has boards changed you as a person ? More mature , opened your mind /views etc?

What do you like/dislike about the way the way boards has changed?

How do you feel about the children that have been born as a result of Boards meetups, and do you feel anything towards them? Does it sometimes scare you that Boards so often crosses over into real-life?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,859 ✭✭✭✭Sharpshooter

It really is a hard site to top now.
    So,what's next in the pipeline?
Will you keep on improving and/or go off in another direction?

Are there plan for adverts? Do you intend to expend employee/admin time on developing the sister site at a future juncture?

I reckon it might be an idea to link in with other social networking sites to give us more of an edge. A lot of the changes that came in with the big vB upgrade could be integrated with other sites a lot more. I think that would be exciting.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,038 ✭✭✭✭Sparks

+1 to that idea for shooting - I mean, right now I'm getting twitter reports from the Clay Pigeon high performance team who are kicking ass all round them in a training camp in Italy. That kind of thing would be of great interest to most of our target shooters. And we would find it far easier to twitter from competitions because of the mobile phone interface (we were doing that from a vintage rifle shoot last weekend, and again, of interest to lots of our shooters).

I dont want to answer the questions here but I did think to point out this link to Kinetic:

Jaysus guys... Didn't any of you actually click the link in the opening post? You were supposed to put your questions there.

    Troll, troll, troll your boat.

    Anyway.

Boards was and is based upon the critical mass of the users, but the vision behind it has, consistently, been DeV's. I'm deliberately not throwing out the oft used phrase "teh_admins" here, because although others have come and gone for varying reasons-mostly the latter) DeV has been omnipresent (in fact he's the only flippin' one here these days), sometimes enthusing about ideas that are doomed to obscurity, sometimes prioritising that which later gets, well, unprioritised, sometimes putting down trolls (heard of 'em?) with indefatigable logic, but always with a clear and concise train of thought for where things are in relation to boards., and where they are going.

So, um, "boards.", what have you done to make "it"?

DeV's comments about boards affecting politics are interesting, but I'd love to know why he thinks, considering AH, that thats a good thing?
Just read the average AH thread, and you will find incredible ignorance there.

EDIT: Woohoo, my question got asked!!
And I meant how you felt about the fact that boards ended up creating children, not if you feel ownership. (Although there are a suspicious number of babies called Tom).

    Yes, many with gay hair.

As regards boards affecting politics, I rather think it's the other way around. Common societal trends will make themselves apparent on a forum like boards, and more precisely, when non specific topics are concerned, like AH.

I know you don't mean to T_M, but AH bashing can at times seem to me rather elitist. As I say speaking generally, it's something I've noticed (along with moans that the site isn't what it used to be etc.).

At the end of the day, many people are pissed of with feckless skangers and nigerian economic "refugees" giving the two fingers to our system, the lack of hot Polish barmaids recently, the concept of recession (a new phenomenon to most of AH's boards' majority demographic), and white dog poo. Ergo, such things are what, on the largest general topic internet discussion forum in Ireland, will get talked about.

Don't get me wrong. I love AH. I really do.

It just pisses me off at the same time, and I can't help feeling that if the more unsavory positions of AH (the blatent racism etc) are espoused often enough, then things like racism and authoritarianism will re-enter acceptable public debate.

Its just hard to stomach at times.

So often really, really, stupid, sometimes untrue things are said, and they aren't rebutted, or are only rebutted five pages later.

+1. You don't have to like it but you don't have to make a point of letting everyone know you don't like it. There are plenty of forums I think are full of very immature people but I don't go telling everyone because... get this... I'm mature enough not to.
As I say speaking generally, it's something I've noticed (along with moans that the site isn't what it used to be etc.).

I also speak generally and this is most definitely not aimed at The Minister. In fact it's not really aimed at anybody in particular. I'm just venting. :)

AH replicates public opinions and pub conversations to a certain extent. In fact it mirrors society in general in many ways. Leaving out the obvious nonsense threads and the trolls, it's probably a better barometer of public opinion on general topics than any other forum here.

So if the general public has racists, you can bet AH will have racists. Blatant racism is not allowed obviously but some people are better at voicing racialistical opinions while not exactly breaking the letter of the law. Those cases are harder to police.

I'm happy to say that AH reflects society warts and all. That society contains some ****ty people is society's problem. The nastier elements of AH are just a symptom.

As for the rebuttal thing, look at it this way: If a bunch of lads said something inaccurate to each other down the pub and nobody who knew better was there to correct them, then they'll never get corrected. On Boards, there will always be someone there to correct them even if they do come late to the party. 5 pages late is better than never.

In fact we sometimes get necro threads dragged up so someone can refute a particular point.

Anyway I've rambled long enough. What the hell does this have to do with the Boardscast? Nothing. That's what. But thanks for the feedback. :)

P.S. My question which was probably the most trivial and stupid of them all got asked. \o/ Also I want royalties for that Nice 4 thing. ;)
