What do you mean seem to get it? These shows are editied so there could of been more talk on this.
I think the market has quite a few of these types of sites now....and I'm quite partial to the new carzone layout.

Missed it ......... (Actually I didnt - changed channel after 2 mins of it )

    What was the pitch ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,187 ✭✭✭keefg

Just watched it on the old Sky+, it would have been nice to see the full pitch rather than the 1 min "Feck Off" snippet.

Fair play to him though, he's got some balls to value his site at just under 1.4 million euro the way things are right now :D.

They didn't show the full pitch or what he wanted the money for....all that happened was he said he wanted 200k for 15% of his company.

One dragon said "You can't give cars away at the moment, I'm out"

The woman dragon said "Every car dealer I know is trying to cut costs right now so they won't pay for more advertising, I'm out"

Another dragon said about the guy doing the pitch "I wouldn't by a used car off you, let alone invest in your company, I'm out"

    And off he went.

I think Dragon Dens is repeated early Sunday evening, 4.30 or 5.00 - well it was this past few weeks.

Anyone advertise with them as a private seller. Is it totally free or is there something in the small print that you only get 1 week free and then they ring you asking for money. If it's free maybe we should all start advertising there.

Totally free...... Quite a few using it now, id imagine

I've seen a northside garage advertising for them. Check out our cars at www.carsireland.ie

Free for private sellers gotta be good.

Anyone in the trade know how competitive there rate are compared to carzone?

I visited the site the second it popped up on DD and couldn't connect. I think it was being hammered around the country :) Great publicity!

Yep, the TV exposure was a good result for him anyway. It will probably help attract more private sellers but I doub't if it will attract any more paying dealer listing at the moment.

I think its a great site, site hosting does not cost anything remotely near 200k, get your facts right or GTFO.

i have to laugh at the valuations people put on their companies on dragons den, in most cases bearing no relation to current earnings, thats if they have ever sold anything, no wonder they dont invest in anything

Your right, but throw in salaries, advertising & marketing cost, rent and other overheads and it all starts to add up.

Who knows? Maybe he didn't want an investment anyway and just wanted a bit of free telly time on RTE.

the woman with the taxi advertising was on turbidy she reckoned she was in there for an hour and a half and it was cut to 50 seconds - think it puts what you see on the box into perspective

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,474 ✭✭✭✭Cyrus

id find that hard to believe, id say they are very strictly time limited, its all filmed on the one day, think of the amount of people they have seen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,380 ✭✭✭daRobot

    Valuation at 1.4 mill.

Jesus, how deluded can you get.

Daft is worth about 10million or so, so that would put that type of spoofing into perspective.

The site isn't bad, but in fairness, it's nothing new.

Alot of people in marketing and advertising in this country are away with the fairies. They don't seem to grasp or don't want to that we live in a small nation and so there is a limited enough appeal even for more mass market products and services. Plus many (especially in the print or online media) don't get it that actual buyers are a miniscule percentage of the target audience or circulation numbers.

Did not see that show but 1.4m valuation is insane. 100k would be closer to real value.

The Irish Dragons Den show is woeful. The Dragons automatically dismiss anything to do with property & are far too parochial. Seems they have a similar view of cars now. Recessions don't last for ever & could take a couple of years to bring some of thos eproducts to market.

Lots of those looking for investment though have a very limited view of things. They just think and are focused solely on the Irish market. You need to have a more global product or at least one that has mass appeal in the UK as well at the very least, for it to be worth a six figure investment sum.

I know of one person who went on the UK show a few years back and their TV pitch of 10 mins was edited down from a 60 minute meet. Everybody turns up on the day, early morning and you hang around for hours on end waiting to get called. Like Jury service. So you could be one of the last, when everybody (dragans and all) are very weary.

I think the dragons are poor really. The posturing in the into is like Jeremy Clarksons one of George Bush (walking broad shouldered with wide arms and very stiff, like a cowboy). Sean Gallagher is the only one who fits the role. The Kerr chap is a bit of a piss artist and the others as entrepreneurs or "ontrapenours" as someone calls them, are quite one dimensional in terms of their own business interests and successes. Certainly not captains of industry.

they certainly pale in comparison to people like peter jones and theo (cannot spell his surname):pac:

The shows with insights into the UK dragans were entertaining. Better when you can see a more personal view of them, their private life, upbringing and whole life story, than just the hard nosed businessmen & women in suits.

Agreed on Gallagher, he's probably the only serious investor there, he seems to not minding taking a punt on an area of business that isn't his own. All the others have a limited field of experience ( ie Gavin Duffy=PR & morketing, Bobby Kerr=Coffee shops and god knows what yer one is up to, feck all by the sounds of it ) If your pitch isn't in their field ( or related to it ) then they always say 'For me this isn't an investment I'd take on'.

The UK Dragons have their fingers in far more pies than their Irish counterparts and have huge distribution networks to bring products to market. The Irish lads are small fry in comparison.

id say she hasnt invested in a thing since she sold that website and sat on her fortune:D altho i cant hold that against her!

I dont think your one has invested in anything, its a piss take on her part to be honest, I have to laugh at your man from the coffee place.. He cuts to the chase very quick. Your Sh*te I'm out..

    Hey I missed the show.
There are loads of used car sites that are free to advertise on look at www.carlister.ie it shows all the free used car sites.
I think the cost of entry into that market is quite cheap anyway, you could probably get a site like that online for less than 10K. (anyone confirm that?) I'd say he needs 200K to pay himself a nice salary and maybe a few debts. Anyway I think everyone knows that all the better cars are on carzone/newspapers and everything else is on the free sites like buy and sell etc.
Where is there room to grow a business like that anyway, especially in this climate..
I must watch the repeat on sunday though, its a great.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,683 ✭✭✭✭Owen

You would imagine the money would not just be used for developing the site, but rather for marketing in an attempt to topple Carzone's market share.
