    hey, i want to get fit for summer and was wondering how effective swimming is?? im not a gym person! how often would i need to go and for how long each session?

    Swimming is my favourite sport and has been considerably good for my fitness and build - but this is the swimming forum - so you're going to get a lot of answers like that.

    Bit of a piece of string, how long is type of question. You could swim every day. Realistically how about 2-3 sessions of 45-60 minutes? Got some kind of exercise in one the off days too - cycling or walking?

    Will you swimming on your own and what kind of distance can you do? If you've never done swim training before it can be very hard to get into the swing of things to make a session effective. Maybe consider a masters swimming club - most clubs will cater for varying levels of skill.
