Garmin Edge 705 Maps

Going around in Circles a bit. Got a new Edge 705 and while I'm happy with it, I looking to do something about the default maps which are basic to say the least.

    - I had a look at the Garmin City Navigator Europe:

    https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=6299&pvID=7880

It costs 150 USD but when you preview the mapping (View Maps) it becomes clear that minor roads are missing in several areas of the country.

    - Went to http://emerald-island.eu/wikka/EmeraldIsland which has been mentioned in
several posts on this forum. Ran their exe which produces a directory structure but cannot find any info on how to combine this stuff in a useful way to produce a gmapsupp.img file (tried ~/bin/sendmap17Lstatic -mEmeraldIsland -l 10000101.img 10000102.img 10000103.img 10000104.img 10000105.img 10000106.img but its not
    as expected).

Does anybody know exactly how you should generate a decent gmapsupp.img file from their data ?

    - I also tried other supplementary maps from free sources but none give decent info.

Does anybody have a good gmapsupp.img file for the country that they're willing to share ?

Basically I'm wondering am I missing something ? Is there somebody out there with an Edge with good quality maps (even better if routable) on them ?

I'm coming to the conclusion that they way to use them (if trying a new route) is to plot your course beforehand, save it and follow it and not bother with trying to use it as a navigator.

Finally to see what you can look at after a cycle:

Its far better than the desktop trainer and your cycles are stored online

The City Navigator Europe has every small tiny little road on it, honest, and the routing works very well. What might be tripping you up is the smaller roads only appear after you zoom right in on the online demo?

It has worked very well for me routing me Dublin-Galway, Dublin-Waterford, Dublin-Cork elsewhere in Ireland and France and Spain too and always down tiny back roads.

I would get City Navigator on DVD, NOT the SD card, this lets you use Mapsource on the PC and unlock maps to one Garmin device.

I went down the same route as Blorg.
Got city navigator on CD,version Europe 2008.1, you have to zoom in the 500m detail to see the small roads.
I have yet to find a back road that is not covered. Obviously any road made after 2007 will not be there, but these are usually motorways and housing estates.

Actually how does downloading of maps work, DVD is 2GB, device has 500MB. Is there a mechanism for unloading maps as you go ?

DVD is all of Europe and you can define whatever subsection you want to download- all Ireland will fit in the internal memory easily AFAIK. Easier still though, just buy a 2gb micro-SD card for a fiver or whatever and stick the maps on that (what I did.)

The biggest problem with Garmin maps related to the one way systems in town. Garmin actually source the maps through the AA who haven't got all of it done right. They have got all the roads in place once they haven't been built in the past 12-24 months. It is mainly estates and 2 or 3 new N roads that are missing/incorrectly positioned.
