Hi I hope someone can point me in the right direction.

I have claimed no social welfare since becomming unemployeed at christmas.
Since then I have been registered as self employed but things are very slow and its likely to be slow for quite a while. Some weeks I make nothing at all.

Can I claim any benefit while registered as self employed?
Can I make back claims for the time I have been without work?

Unfortunately my understanding is that the answer to both is no. You will need to de-register as self-employed and get a letter from your accountant that you have done so and I think your claim will only start when you make your claim. Speak to your local welfare claims officer to confirm though

You do not need to de-register as self employed if you are a sole trader.
You cannot make back claims but go to your social welfare office and sign on immediately. As self employed you may be entitled to Jobseeker's allowance which is means tested.
If you were in PAYE employment up to Christmas then plead you case that you should be entitled to Jobseeker's benefit which is based on your previous PRSI payments.
Being self employed will do you no favours when it comes to claiming social welfare benefits.

For that reason it makes sense to de-register. That was the advice given to me anyway. As I said the best thing to do is to go and speak to a welfare advisor. They will be able to look at your personal circumstances and work out the best way forward for you.
