Haggling on a mini?

I'm saving a lot of money and i'm going to continue saving until i get my full license - hopefully early summer. Hope to have 4 to 5 grand saved up for the summer. Hope to take out a small loan too of maybe 3 grand. So should have 7 to 8 grand to spend on a car.

    I'm aiming for a mini.

Have been pricing minis and they are expense. Priced 2003 mini in the auto trader a few weeks ago for 9k. Priced an 04 mini recently for 14k.

My dad is good at haggling so if i was to get my dad to haggle would it be possible to buy maybe an 02 or 03 mini for 7 to 8 grand.

A mini convertible would be nice. Would I be able to get a mini convertible for my budget.

Also should I buy from a car dealership or buy privately.

And lastly, are minis good cars. They're gorgeous.

    s.

I'd say you'd need at least Eur10,500 for the 2003 or 2004 convertible.

Thanks for your reply Nico. Might continue saving until the end of the summer so.

The convertible was launched in late 2004, so there aren't many around. 2005 is when they became popular. I'm selling my other half's 2004 convertible privately, but it's out of your budget unfortunately. Convertibles went up significantly in price this year which copperfastened the residuals on the used ones.

8 grand at the moment will get you a 02/03 (There are some dreamers out there looking 12-13k for 02's, even on adverts.ie), but if it's a few months down the road you should be getting close to a 04 hatchback.

The nay-sayers are bound to chime in shortly claiming all sorts of cars you should be able to get, but the fact remains that even in the UK, MINIs aren't dropping too much, even in these recessionary times.

Price of Minis really holding up in UK. I bought 03 Cooper in UK in Sept, and identical car from same source in Feb was 250 pounds more, even though now a year older. Looking at AutoTrader, even in the North 02-03 Mini's are holding value very well, typically 5000-6000 pounds depending on spec. You would be doing very well to have one in for 8000 euro.

What's funny about Mini's is that there is huge demand for the cheaper ones (02, 03) but 05, 06 ones don't make much more money. A 02 could be priced at 10k and a 06 around 16k - much better value but it would appear there are less buyers at the higher price - probably out of the price range for many people.
