The penny just dropped with me that Ireland play Canada on the same day as the HEC final. What 'genius' agreed to that one  ?

Ireland play Canada & USA on May 23 & May 30. Wales play them May 30 & June 06. Could we not have scheduled our games for the same 2 dates ?

I haven't found any detail for this year's Churchill Cup. Anyone know if it is not being held this year ? If Canada & USA are hosting Ireland & Wales, does that precluse the CC ?

The Churchill Cup is going ahead this year after the summer tests. Ireland A, Canada, USA, England A, Argentina A and Georgia I think are in it.
The scheduling is not ideal (the first Lions tour game suffers from a similar problem I think), but it will be largely a shadow side anyway. I imagine the summer tour squad and Churchill Cup squad will have a reasonable amount of overlap. Thankfully from Kidney's point of view, at least one of Leinster or Munster won't be in the final.

Ireland will be missing in excess of 35 players for this tour.

I wouldn't get too worried, it will probably just be used as a chance to try out players such as cave on an international field

Bit crazy handing out international caps for it all the same. With so many front line players missing.

Where did you figure this 35 absentees from? 13 (probably back to 14 if d'Arcy goes with the Lions) with how many injuries? What about the rest?

Does cheapen the caps a bit imo, you'll get a few players there who'll never get near an Irish shirt again imo. Terrible scheduling is to blame anyway and that's it.

12 Lions, Leinster squad, 2 Tigers, 2 Northampton Saints. That's all I can think of.

There's more than 2 at Northampton I think. But the entire Leinster squad + 7 Munster Lions is the bulk of it. Leinster will possibly bring players outside of the matchday 22 along too just in case.

Edit - list of players unavailable for seniour tour to North America (very much open to correction so don't hang me if there's a mistake!)

Bowe, O'Connell, O'Callaghan, O'Driscoll, Kearney, Fitzgerald, Ferris, Quinlan, D Wallace, O'Gara, Heaslip, Flannery, Earls, O'Kelly, Dempsey, Horgan, D'Arcy, Cullen, Jackman, Jennings, Hogan, Sexton, Healy, O'Brien, J Fogarty, Toner, McFadden (??), G Murphy, J Murphy, N Best, Wilson, Downey, Everitt, O'Leary, Trimble, Pollock (think he's injured).

Hell of a lot more than 14 anyway.

    Ah yes. I see now.

It will be an ideal chance for rest of Irish playerbase to impress Dec, Gert and Les though before the Lions tour sets where they will no doubt be watching the Irish contingent play there too.
The reason the caps are awarded I'd say would be because fair is fair re.respect to the teams they play.
