I've just noticed that someone who joined after me has the same username, or so I thought! With the underscore character _ our usernames appear identical. I'm not happy about this and don't want to change my username, can anything be done about it?

Nope. Aside from subscribing and getting your name changed, or convincing the other person to do that.
