    Hey all,

Just back from the dentist. I had not visited one in 2 1/2 years and he told me i had periodontitis which means i have to go a private specialist for treatment. Just looked at some youtube videos and the procedure(s) do not look pretty.

It is 120 euros a visit:eek: and i am on a disability allowance. I know it wont be covered by medical card. Will i just have to accept that i will have to take a loan out for the treatment or are there any other avenues open to me?

    Yours Sincerely,

    John

Was it a private dentist you went to or a local HSE clinic ?
See if your local HSE clinic offers periodontic treatment as that would be fully covered under your medical card.

Ill check that out. thank you for your reply Santa Claus

It was a private dentist. Strange how he did not give me the option of the HSE route.

I wonder would i be better to go private as the public way might be of lesser quality?

no HSE dont offer this service but please dont think there any lower quality there fantastic hard workers and alot more money is put into cross infection and training.

The matter is decided anyways. there is a 8 month to a year wait to see the hse guy in cork so i got to go private

Maybe ring around other HSE clinics and ask how long their waiting lists are ( if you are willing to travel -but if youre on disability Im guessing you have a travel pass ?).
I was on an operation list last year and after ringing around different consultants I found one with a 3 month waiting list as opposed to a year.

If you're willing to travel, and are going private- why not consider Newry or Belfast? Waiting lists are lots shorter too.

You might find that taking a cheap flight over to Budapest or Prague will save you some money, even when you factor in the hotels accommodation and flights! But be careful, do your research, plenty of hoaxs and not so reputable clinics on the net.

I went to 3 different dentists here and was given 3 different opinions, lmao. If you are anywhere near Cork you could phone the CUH Dental Hospital (they might be able to advise about periodontal work etc) You have to pay but not as much as going fully private and imho their manner generally sucks but they could save you some money.

See, before I went to the dentist I was like this :( but now I'm like this :D...
