See that's way more appealing to me than a V10 monstrosity borne of the German manufacturers BHP war.

Each to their own with what they like in a car :) I personally don't like it.

This, however, makes me wet myself every single time.

I never really liked old car no matter what it was, I like to try and stay modernish.

    I prefer this http://www.cbg.ie/Car_Detail.aspx?ID=2766964#

That E28 is mint - Would you get vintage tax/insurance?

I actually went to look at that E34, it looks like an old Russian car and a few of the panel gaps were a bit off.

The E39 M5 is handbuilt too, don't think I'll ever sell my one. They're getting seriously cheap now.

Just a personal opinion - while I can see why some people would be mad keen on something like originally posted.. Give me 5ltr V10, 500bhp odd, heated leather seats, HUD, all electrics etc anyday.

Not according to Wikipedia and my BMW fanatic relatives:
    Wikipedia wrote:

Unlike its predecessors, the E39 M5 was not handbuilt at the BMW M GmbH factory; it was produced on the same assembly line as the normal E39 5-series at the Dingolfing factory in Germany

The E34 was the last handbuilt M5 and the last one with a signiture inline6 engine.

Because you drive the original car, but merely operate the models you refer to.

    Well, now you know better!
Dig out the brochure, afaik it might refer to the M5 V8 engines as being "handbuilt", not the car. Thanks to mass production there were something like 28k e39 M5s out there, definately not handbuilt.

    Nice overview of M5s:

e39 M5's have been giving me the horn especialy over the past year for some reason, maybe becausee the e39's are becoming a more rare sight on our roads, I think they just exude an understated class and seem or give me the feeling of being less complicated and fragile than the new e60(I know someone that had their M6 SMG box replaced twice :(). The V8 may not give the same wail as the new V10 but fit a nice free flowing exhaust to it and it will out rumble it's modern counter part when just cruising along.

Now I am pretty young and although I appreciate all this new technology such as fitted to the new M5, with its 11 shift programs and the like but I just love the idea of a more simple driving experince, I suppose I kind of like the AMG approach more to the modern M approach but it is hard to argue against their effectiveness.

Although they are becoming quite reasonable, I could not justify the big tax and insurance bill at the moment, however, an e39 M5 is definitely in my 5 car lottery garage :)

Still doesnt change my preference for which one I would like to be behind the wheel of - I would take modern all day long

Maybe its just some people value individuality, rarity and the thought that the car they own was handmade by dedicated people rather than made by robots on an assembly line.

Saying that, I wouldn't say no to an E60 M5!!

edit: oops I suppose I should refresh my browser a bit more!

I like shiny new things too, but I hear what you are saying. Imo, the driving but not styling spirt of the old M cars is alive in the VXR8 (aka Pontiac G8, originally HSV Clubsport R8), so its not all computer operated controlled fun these days.

If I had the choice of a new E39 M5 or the current model I'd take the E39 anyday, in fact, i'd take a second hand E39 over the current M5 anyday, I always prefered the shape and handelling of the E39.

I'm pretty sure that's been for sale for about 12 months at different dealers around the country...almost certain it was the one I went to see in Dublin, then it was at a dealer in Kerry for 27k  and now it's there. If it is the same one it appears to be in decent enough nick but there is probably no market at the mo...

If I didn't need an every day car I'd love something like that E28 although there is a lot of lovely slightly older stuff ('85 onwards) for great money. I remember someone's Dad at school had one in red (could have been an M535i though), I wanted it then and I want it now either way!

So true, E60s are ten a penny now and although its a decent car, the sheer volume of them puts me off altogether. I'd take a 2002+ E39 over an E60 too.

Which is why I love my E39. Although only a 2 litre, it's the most comfortable car I have ever been in. It's a mans car, pure and simple.

    +1

There's something about the M-Techs even in them that looks excellent. V.nice car.

Love old school cars.. but the cars posted in the thread are death traps in the wrong hands (and they're easily accessible at 11k), lovely to admire on the internet etc etc... but I'll take my E92 M3 with 420bhp and the technology and safety features to actually use the power and not risk killing someone else or myself.

I heard reliably that of 16 M5s brought into Ireland one year, 10 were write offs by the end of it, these were all current models too.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,413 ✭✭✭HashSlinging

I wouldnt be surprised by that at all, the older ones were called widowmakers in the UK, I'd only buy one for the shed, and a bit of serious drifting in mondello.. nice bit of 80's nostalgia though.

A friend of mines dad is from London and told me back in the 80's at one stage one of his mates went through a BMW every year, not joking, drink driving and wrapping them all around trees.

Even only going back a few years to the 318is coupe of the 90s, inexperienced hands, good luck to you....as soon as you try slide the new M3 with full dynamic on it pulls you back in and you're on the straight and narrow but it will still allow you step it out it just won't let you lose it. There's 3 different options of how much you want the car to do, you can't argue with safety stuff like that IMO as you get the best of both worlds.

Having crawled out of a car upside down, gimme airbags and side impact bars etc etc anyday, I'll gladly look at something like the above all day long but there's a lot to be said about newer cars versus the 'raw' experience of older stuff (which I do get by the way!).

I drive an older car myself. When driving it I need to remember I havn't got ABS, ESP or airbags etc. Once I keep this in mind I feel I'll be safe on the roads. What I'm saying is treat the car with respect and you'll be grand, treat it badly and it'll bite harder than a horny rothweiler

I prefer the unaided, pure mechanical driving experience of older cars. All this electrickery just disowns you.

Having said that, I'd never buy a full-on sports car (electronically nannied or not) for use on these roads anyway. The "car potential vs. road quality curve" just isn't in your favour.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,323 ✭✭✭MarkN

I do appreciate that side of it too.

I was shocked to learn the E92 M3 doesn't even have a wire attached to the throttle - it sends electronic signals.. ?!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,801 ✭✭✭✭Gary ITR

Doesn't it monitor the position of the throttle something like 100 times per second? I read that myself somewhere

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,323 ✭✭✭MarkN

    Something mental like that.

The engine is also built on the same bench as the BMW F1 engines.

There's a few nice old school BMWs in Frank Keane's on Naas Rd if anyone is ever passing.

I don't know if it is the same place, but I saw an M1 in a Bmw Dealership up in Dublin a few years back. It was a smallish dealership at the time. Showroom wasn't any spectacular?
