Yep, it's easily done. Had a 500gb one in mine, put back in the 80gb though and using the 500 in an external drive.

Alot of people have upped the HDD.

    Mine is now a 250Gb.

Easy enough to do once the screw heads don't disintegrate, which can happen if you don't have the correct size screwdriver.

Ye mines 320gb and I need it lol think I only have 100gb or that left. Yes my screws messed up but a handy way to fix it is get a hack saw or something like that small and use it to cut the screw so you can put one of the screw drivers that don't have the star if you get what I mean.

Well worth upgrading especially if you plan on downloaded demos and games on PSN store

Any reason for stopping having the 500 internal? Does it get complicated using to storage mediums for the ps3 at a time, and how did you use it externally if it was an internal?
    Thnx!

to use it as an external u can buy a hdd shell or caddy! usually about 12-15 euro!

i use a 250 internal and made my 60 into an external! also have a 1tb external hdd permanantly plugged into ps3! runnin outta space on it tho!

ps 1 good reason to "stop using the 500" as an internal would be u can hook the external 500 to the pc as well! its not complicated at all!

Sweeet! Thanks! Gonna do this in the near future, just needed some trusted confirmation

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,785 ✭✭✭eddhorse

Yep ive got a 320GB internal in mine and a 250GB external to go between the laptop and ps3. Only 60GB left on the internal, back to its original size !

ps watch out for the screws, i cant stress it enough, it should be stickied actuallly on the unit itself !

Sorry to hijack the thread but is there anyway to copy movies onto the ps3 across your network without using windows media player?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 998 ✭✭✭zekiel

nah windows media player is a waste..

Use http://code.google.com/p/ps3mediaserver/ instead.. your life will be much easier.

What type of enclosure do I need to put my 80GB HDD from my PS3 into?

2.5? Stata (Is ESTATA different?). Guess it would be a reasonable use of the HDD.

I am looking at Kompett now but their search system for enclosures if poor, all I want is the cheapest one.

SATA. 2.5 SATA thats what you need. yeah ESTATA is different!

btw, do you have to download patches, additional game content, and all that again, and reinstall gameinstalls or will they all be backed up?
And as for map packs. games i.e warhawk, playstation store would know you bought it and let you download it again??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,726 ✭✭✭✭noodler

I am pretty sure they are all backed up too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,485 ✭✭✭Mr. K

Ooh, tempting. Those HDDs can be got cheaply too...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,561 ✭✭✭✭Varik

the back up copys every thing if it goes to the same ps3 (possible needs to be the same hdd)
not sure if every thing is copyed when upgrading hdd you also need to connect to psn to back up trophies

Will the following enclosure work for the 80GB HDD that came with my ps3?

    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=446544

Its only 13e and not quite in stock yet but I will buy this with a new HDD to save on the postage if it works (cheapest enclosure I could find!)

    Or this one http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=365595

    Hey Guys

I replaced the hard drive in my old PS3 60gb with a WD 320gb one and it worked perfect. I tried to put the same one into my mates new 80gb PS3, but the following error came up "wrong hard disk inserted". Any ideas on how I get around this problem.

    Thanks

Is the FW up to date, i know a dude who had a similar problem, he just updated via usb key.

    Hey Noodler

    Try this one

Cheaper than Komplett and delivery from Northern Ireland.

I'll get him to try and make sure Firmware is up to date and try again.

Yup, Sony recently changed the way Firmware upgrades work.

Old way : The entire firmware was installed in flash
New way : A tiny subset of the firmware is installed in flash [about 16MB iirc] and the rest is installed on the hard drive. This was purely down to security concerns. It is soooo much harder to gain access to the hard drive data than the flash storage [in hacking terms].

Upgrading the firmware sounds like the solution to your problem.

Cheers, I already ordered the one from Komp! At least the delivery will be free cos I got a HDD with it.

Are Komp Irish doesn anybody know? Or are they just a multinational over here with a .ie website?

Or more correctly are they a MNC operating in Ireland or do they just post everything from abroad?

They're Norwegian if I remember correctly. I'm pretty sure that they ship stuff here from The Netherlands. They do have a warehouse or office here now. So I guess that would make them a MNC operating in Ireland with a .ie website that receives stock from their other stores abroad.

Okay a few questions before the new HDD comes.

I haven't really got anything (external stroage wise) to back up the old HDD to. If I take out my 80gb and put it in an enclosure as is, then put in the new HDD, will the PS3 be able to take what it needs from the 80gb thats now in the enclosure?

Failing that, is it possible to backup everything to a laptop? (Does said laptop HAVE to be FAT32-I think its just FAT-and if it is I guess that would meaning deleting everything on it which isn't an option).

EDIT: Or could I backup ONLY what the PC can't read to my MP3 player-around 20gb (game saves installs etc) and then the new HDD should have no trouble taking the video/music etc from the old, enclosed drive?

    No

Not directly. It has to be a usb key or an external hdd via USB.

Your PC won't be able to read ANYTHING from the PS3 HDD. It's encrypted.

You SHOULD be able to use your MP3 player but it's format must be FAT32. It should appear as external storage. However, as you quote, it only has about 20GB free where as your PS3 is an 80GB [full?]

I suggest, delete EVERYTHING you don't need from your PS3 [demos, movies, music, etc] and perform the backup. It won't overwrite anything on your MP3 player.

If possible, copy everything from your MP3 player to your laptop, to free up as much space as possible.

If above is not possible, the best you can probably do it borrow a big external hard drive for a few days [yes it may take that long] or just backup your game saves, then install all your games again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,265 ✭✭✭RangeR

By the by, When I put my 320GB HDD into my PS3, it took about 24 hours to format. Just qualifying my statement of borrowing an external HDD "for a few days"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,726 ✭✭✭✭noodler

    Thank you for your candor.

Yes, I meant I would shuttle all my video files etc to my pc so that the only things that couldn't be transferred I would use my mp3 player for as you said.

Grand so thats the way it has to be.

Oh I have "heard" stories that this one http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=343402

wouldn't have to be formatted but its a common drive so maybe someone already knows.

I think that's the same HDD that I have. Never had a problem with it. Why wouldn't it have to be formatted? The PS3 HDD isn't a PC format. In that it's not NTFS, FAT32 or FAT. The format maybe based on a known format but there are changes made and encryption added [maybe even at the low level] so that it's not readable by any other device.

I have heard of people doing a quick format but for the sake of the stuff that you may be putting on, I went with the full format. No biggy, you just can't use the PS3 for 24 hours.

Actually, now that I think of it. I originally tried a quick format. It worked and I could use the PS3. However, I couldn't restore my backup until I did a full format. Memory is fuzzy at this stage so I'm not 100% sure if the full format is related to restoring the backup.

Cheers again, why does everybody talk of FAT32 when talking about the PS3 then?

I am a bit lost with some of this stuff.

As far as the PS3 is concerned, FAT32 only relates to the external USB device [USB key or external HDD]. I don't know if anyone [outside of Sony devs] know what format the internal PS3 HDD format is. But I do know that no one has worked out how to break the encryption [or at least they haven't made it public].

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,726 ✭✭✭✭noodler

Okay, can anyone explain the difference between a quick format and a full format?

A bit of googling suggests the only advantage of a Full Formate is that it will delete retrievable files whereas a quick one may leave some files open to retrieval by those with the IT skillz.

Since it is a new HDD, is there really any point to go for the Full one?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,726 ✭✭✭✭noodler

Crap, it didn't work. No firmware recognised when the new drive went in.

I am downloading it pn the PC, has to be on a subfolder called UPDATE within the PS3 folder, right?

It does indeed. Once it's in a folder with that name the PS3 should recognise it no problem. Good luck :D

Grand. Hmmmm somehow Im using 248 of the 298gb.....strange. I thought my backup was only 17 GB after I transferred all the vidjos to the PC.

Anyway, done (quick format-would a Proper one have any effect I keep asking?) and a new 80GB External put into a caddy.

Well when I have a new drive to put into a PC I always just do a quick format because the drive is brand new, so a quick format should be fine. It's what I used when I put my new HDD into my PS3 anyways.

As for why your seeing 248GB or 298GB free, I'm not sure what the story is there. Did you delete all of your game data before the back up?

320 GB hDD, of course knew it wouldn't really be that big, so I understand why theres a total capacity of 298GB. Just surprised about the extra mystery space thats being used, but then you hear the PS3 just takes some for itself depending on the size of the HDD.

I wonder if this is something a Proper Format would affect?

Ah well. Space sorted for the foreseeable future.

The format would affect the total size, so as you're seeing 298GB then the format worked fine. I also have a 320GB drive and 298GB is what I see. (I know you know about that though so that wasn't what I was getting at).

What I meant was that you said that you thought that your backup was 17GB, was it definitely 17GB? I'll have to check when I get home if I have any explained used space on my drive. It could be that the PS3 reserves a certain percentage of a drive and not a specific amount of memory, so maybe that's why your amount of free space seems a bit off. Maybe the PS3 OS reserves 10% of the drive for itself? That could explain the mystery ~30GB you're missing.

I had to do my backup on a 20gb (18gb really) MP3 player so I knew that was all I had.

Down to 229GB now after I added 20GB of video (Just checked again to make sure it wasn't 240GB AFTER I had put the video on).

Yeah, must just rob space from you. Shame a 320GB is now pretty much a 270GB or something like that but anyways.

Your backup was 17GB but maybe the PS3 compresses the files as it is adding them to the backup. I have no idea but it might.

No, that's not the only difference. A full format alters the "format" of the hdd for a given operating system so that the OS knows how to write information to it. There are many HDD formats [FAT, FAT32, NTFS, EXT3 etc].

A quick format doesn't alter the "format" of the HDD. It just wipes the file allocation table [FAT] so that the HDD appears to be empty. The files are still there but will appear not to be.

This is the same way that deleting files works. Deleting files doesn't delete the actual file from the disk. It just marks the file as deleted in the FAT. This is how you can usually recover files after they have been deleted and if nothing was done to the HDD. I don't include the recycle bin in this process.

I don't think so, I was pretty careful counting down what had to be deleted/moved before I had a small enough amount of files left to perform a backup to the MP3 player.

Sorry for resurecting an old thread, just didn't see the point in starting a new one!

So, have decided it's time to upgrade the old hard drive. I've seen these two on komplett
    http://www.komplett.ie/k/kcp.aspx?sku=379042&sku=378960
but just wanted anyones advice etc before I go buying anything. Obviously I think I'll go for the 500gb as it's a tenner cheaper, can't work that one out but never mind. Anyone got any other recomendations or anything?

    Thanks in advance.

They both look fine too me. I would maybe put forward the 320 GB option by WD on the same site for 59 though. I got that and am nowhere close to filling it personally.

    Just putting it out there.

Nope. None whatsoever. I only picked that one because of the price/colour anyway.
