got an invite to play this next week but 50/50 on it at the min
i hear its quite difficult - very many fairways cant be seen from the teebox and some are extremely narrow?
its a work thing so i'm not in the business of going out and humiliating myself with the boss and some potential clients so perhaps i should hold off
my boss is no great shakes either, playing at 17/18 handicap as far as I know so between the two of us i'm sure we'd struggle

    Amen to that:D
If its very windy buy 2 boxes:eek:

Played last summer(?) with society.... was really too soon as was playing less than a year with crappy starter set.... but still enjoyed it:).... can't wait to go back!!!

    typically i'd go for it
but if i'm to be totally honest one of my motivations in taking up golf was to strike some deals on the course
if i'm off searching in the rough for half the afternoon i cant see it being too productive
altho our potential clients were impressed when we mentioned the european club so it might be hard to avoid at this stage
perhaps i'll just put the head down at the range for the next few days and start praying for a monsoon!

Don't worry! Unless they are all Tiger's they too will be searching!;)

Conno16, The European Club is in the top five courses in the country. You have to play it for the experience alone. You also have the advantage that the rough will not have grown up yet so you'll be surprised at how often an errant shot will be found - even if it's windy (in which case everyone will be struggling)!

I disagree with whoever told you that fairways aren't on show. There are very few that you can't see from the tee - unless you're trying to hit your drives 280+. It's a tough course, no doubt about that, but if ever the adage about 'course management' deserves to be followed, it's here. Best round of golf I've ever played here was using a 3 iron off the tee, because it stopped me being stupid.

    Good luck

Be careful not to lose any of your customers in the fairway bunkers!

Fabulous golf course, dont turn down the opportunity & go out and enjoy it

Because your only motivation is to "strike deals" the experience may go over your head and be wasted... who knows.
If you love the game and appreciate design then you will most likely love the place. It is very hard and relatively small mistakes often cost a shot but as Kevin said, try your best to keep the ball in play more than try to hit it too far... enjoy the views.

Some great holes on it and it is a great course but wouldn't be in my top 5 or Top 10.

If we all liked the same thing the world would be a boring place.

Horses for courses and all that,

One thing annoys me about the course is the 100+ yard green. What is the point of it bar PR?

You're right about horses for courses. It's what makes playing golf so much fun. I know what you mean about the 100 yard green, but after 6 or 7 visits I've never seen it anywhere but the front quarter. I get the impression that Pat designed it just to be different - and people talk about it enough so he achieved his objective.

Well, how did it go? As LOFT said, you had the perfect day. Isn't it links heaven when you walk out to the 12th tee?

great course but have to say the west is the only place for links golf
the 7th is a marvellous hole clearly
also there is a par three on the back 9 that really stood out - think its the the 13th
the holes are good along the dunes but not in the same league as those beside the atlantic
a good substitute though for those of us based in the greater dublin area
hope to play there again during the summer
surprisingly (or worryingly) quiet there - gave me plenty time to look around the rough!

Glad you enjoyed your day but to say the west is the only place to play links golf is a stretch and naive. Yes the west is blessed with fine Links courses but the East of Ireland has Royal County down, The Island, Portmarnock, Royal Dublin, County Louth and Ardglass as beautiful examples of Links golf. Play them and then decide

You mean the Irish Sea conno:D

Glad you enjoyed it and by god did you get a nice afternoon for it aswell. Im playing it with my works society in May. Cannot Wait.

Interesting point about it being quiet. I was in Seapoint this day last week and on the 16th tee box i had a look over the dune into Baltray and the place was packed. Hosting an upcoming Irish Open must do wonders for business!

    versus:

ballybunnion, lahinch, doonbeg, enniscrone, waterville, carne etc

in my opinion its a one-sided contest but admittedly i have yet to play county louth and ardglass from your list above

Ive played every course on both lists bar Doonbeg and how you can say nothing compares to the west is a joke.

Ireland as a whole has some of the best links courses in the world, in the north, south, east and west, period!

You never fail to come out with a stupid comment, mostly for effect by your previous comments. Glad you had some sunshine to warm your back while you searched for golfballs.

    only lost 4 balls yesterday
considering i had not played there before thats good in my book
i've played a lot of some of the finer courses in the west through work in the last 12 months - in addition as i live close to dublin i generally play around the GDA
maybe i'm a little biased but i just feel the west has some real gems
probably world class gems - but then i have not played enough to qualify this

You hit the nail on the head there, so why bother saying it in the first place?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,335 ✭✭✭conno16

    f22
my qualification is in relation to the west of ireland -v- the rest of the world

anyways, i respect your opinion

Last time I was down there I drove it on the front right of the first green. Can anyone top that?

It was a bit down breeze and from the middle tees but still...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,335 ✭✭✭conno16

you returning from a liquid lunch SS or something stronger possibly??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,063 ✭✭✭Adiaga 2

That's good going SS. I've only played the course once and it was a good few years ago(loved it too). I thought the first was a fairly easy short par 4 but the course got me back on holes 2 to 18. I did wonder if they'd lengthened the 1st since.

No I just hit it pretty long.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,335 ✭✭✭conno16

were you going for the green?

personally i hit a respectable 5 iron but only got maybe 170 yards out of it
held abck cause i hadn't played with two of the other blokes before but as it turns out they were both equally rubbish
one guy didn't hit a fairway all day off the tee and musta been short of the womens tee box on at least 3 occasions - great stuff, but the course was a bit wasted on them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,476 ✭✭✭ShriekingSheet

    conno16 wrote: »
were you going for the green?

Yeah, I knew I needed to land it right of the front bunker to let it kick on.
