    Hi,

I am unlocking a 1.1.4 2G iphone with pwnage... I'm following the iclarified tutorial & it says at step 8 if its the first time to do it you will be asked to upload the 3.9 and 4.6 BL files. I haven't been prompted for this but it went straight to saving the custom restore file.

Will it work ok do you think?? I dont want to feck up the phone!

The Bootloaders are only for unlocking the phone, did you select that option here:

    Any suggestions??

Firstly, it's SHIFT + Restore to manually select your IPSW. Secondly, to exit DFU, hold down the Power + Home button while connected to the PC until iTunes detects it (have iTunes open).

Its alt + restore on a mac!

When i hold the home & power button it goes into recovery mode - itunes & usb cable appear on the screen of the phone & get the same msg in itunes "The ipod software update server could not be contacted".

Try turning off Automatic Carrier Updates in the Preferences.

EDIT: Wait, the Error say's iPod and not iPhone?

Well, it is an iPhone after all. Try disconnecting the iPhone from the computer, hold down the Power + Home for 30 seconds and then let go. Then try turning on the iPhone itself. According to Google, that iPod error comes up when iTunes can't access the internet - try updating to the latest version within iTunes. If it doesn't work, there is an issue there somewhere.

When i open itunes it initally says its contacting the server for iphone software update & then when it fails it says "The ipod software update server could not be contacted".

The bloody phone is stuck in recovery mode now regardless of holding the home + power buttons! Grr

iTunes should still give you the option to update or restore the phone especially if you are in recovery mode. Try force your way into DFU mode:

Step 1. Turn off your iPhone.

Step 2. Hold down the power and home button.

Step 3. When you see the Apple logo, release the power button but continue holding the home button down.

Step 4. Open iTunes and wait for it to tell you that its in restore mode.

Ok i have turned off, held power & home button, apple logo appeared, let go of power but continued to hold home... the itunes logo & usb cable appear on the screen... so its still in recovery mode!

Used pwnage to put phone in recovery mode - this worked. Opened itunes & still get "The ipod software update server could not be contacted". Iphone not in sources so cant see info tab or anything to restore it.

My genius sidebar is still working so this would suggest itunes doesnt have a problem with internet.

Well somethings not right there, run your Apple Software Update and get the latest iTunes in case you don't have it.

When i connect my own 2G iphone it comes up no problem in the sources & i can click the info tab & have the option to restore.

But when i connect the 3g one in DFU mode i immediately get the same error as before.

I'm downloading an itunes update now so i'll see how things go!

Hopefully it's just iTunes because you need the latest version for the 3G. It's probably why it thinks it's a iPod.

Ok itunes updated - detected iphone & did alt+restore & loaded custom firmware .ipsw file but got the error "The iphone could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1600)."

Ok good, now you need to enter DFU mode and repeat the upgrade process. A guide I found says:

    16. Okay, let’s continue and keep your iPhone connected to the dock/USB. First, power off your iPhone.

    Power off your iPhone

    17. After power off, press “Sleep/Power” and “Home” buttons at the same time and hold them for around 10 seconds (Starting counting!)

Put iPhone into DFU mode - Hold “Power” and “Home” button for 10 seconds

    18. After 10 seconds, release your finger that holds “Sleep/Power” button. But keep holding “Home” button for another 10 seconds.

Put iPhone into DFU mode - Release “Power” and hold “Home” button for 10 more seconds

    19. After that, release “Home” button. Your iPhone will still appear to be powered off. But, if you have successfully put your iPhone into DFU mode, Windows will detect your iPhone as a new device. (If you fail to do so, power on your iPhone and try again! Remember timing is important).

Did you get any errors numbers? Try restarting your machine and putting the iPhone into a different USB port.

An iphone has been detected, but it could not be identified properly. Please disconnect and reconnect the iphone, then try again. An unknown error occurred (2001).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 283 ✭✭moorele

ok when disconnect & reconnect it recognises & can alt +restore... so trying that again now.. fingers crossed it works this time

Restart your phone about few times and then try put it in DFU mode again (while not connected to the PC) and then try again.

PS: What Firmware is currently on the iPhone 3G? What Firmware are you trying to update to?

    PPS: Good to know.

    Lovely stuff bud!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 283 ✭✭moorele

Ok i know this has been problematic from the start so apologies!

Thought the jailbreak had worked - phone is on 2.2.1 BUT my baseband is still 02.11.07. I cant continue with the unlock unless the baseband is on 02.28.00

Any help/suggestions? I'm not convinced the original jailbreak worked now... I thought this was meant to be easy...

Restore to Apple's official 2.2.0 with the 02.28.00 Baseband and then repeat the procedure.

Don't worry about it - just don't keep it up ;)

Ok i have restored to 2.2.0 & its on baseband 02.28.00 & working fine.

Can I unlock from here with yellowsn0w or do i need to do the whole update to 2.2.1 thing with pwnage first???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 283 ✭✭moorele

Ignore that last post i just realised I have to use pwnage as i dont have cydia etc on the phone...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,089 ✭✭✭cpu-dude

Remember that screenshot I posted up, you need to recreate a custom IPSW with Cydia selected and restore it once again. Then run Yellowsnow.

    EDIT:

Ok re-pwn'd & created a new 2.2 custom .ipsw file... restored the phone but have no network - carrier section in settings is gone!!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,089 ✭✭✭cpu-dude

What's the bootloader version now? Have you ran Yellowsnow?

    Hey,

Bootloader is 02.28.00 - havent ran yellowsn0w yet... Have no wifi access at the minute but have an O2 pay as you go sim so was gonna use that to download & run yellowsn0w.

If I run yellowsn0w with my home wifi when i get home will that sort it??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,089 ✭✭✭cpu-dude

For legit use, the O2 SIM needs to be activated through iTunes. Yeah it should do, what network SIM card are you trying to use in it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 283 ✭✭moorele

Vodafone is what will be used.

I have a 2g iphone which is unlocked & using the pay as you go O2 sim. So stuck that in to the 3g phone to try & use my credit to download yellowsn0w bcuz no access to wifi right now... Will yellowsn0w restore the carrier settings??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,089 ✭✭✭cpu-dude

Won't technically restore them but it will unlock it to allow the Vodafone SIM.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 283 ✭✭moorele

Problem solved - had to deselect activate during pwnage process!!!

Ah now, it used to be easy back in the day of AppSnapp - it's a little more tedious now. No worries! :D
