    Hi,

I've just finished a half marathon, so doing some swimming now to give my joints a break from road running. I'd be a decent swimmer but wouldn't swim too often and never anything competitive or anything. Anyway, I did a 750m swim this morn (mix of 2 lenghts breastroke, 1x front crawl, 1 x back stroke; for 44 lengths in 17m pool) in 21 minutes.

Just wondering if 21mins is ok or terrible and what would be a good sort of club level time that I can now aim for? And how many seconds should I hope to get off in each swim?

Sorry if the q's are a bit silly - I know all my various running times and speeds so well but I just don't know the equivalent in swimming.

    Many thanks,

    Simon

to start off with, try a standard distance just using one stroke, with no stopping, eg front crawl for 800m or 1000m or 1500m, if these are too long, try a 400m, but if you want to compare times you need to swim a standard distance without stopping, just using one stroke. (If you wish to compare times with a club swimmer, Im a serious swimmer myself, so for example I would do the 800m FC in about 11.40, the 1000 in about 14.30, the 1500 in about 22 mins, and the 400m in about 5.45.)
Alternatively you could try a series of 100m swims on a set time, eg 5 x 100m FC on say every 2 mins and once you can do this try to bring the repeat time down to say 1.30. Hope this helps and good luck. Swimming is excellent as a warm down from running by the way!

Yeah there's no point timing a mix of strokes like that. You could be going great on the frontcrawl and backcrawl but with your breaststroke killing you.
